No slates running in SGA 2008 elections

With about three weeks until the 2008 Student Government Association presidential elections, nobody showed up to the nomination convention Monday night to show their interest in running. Lynda Wiley, director of the Office of Student Life, said she began working at Ball State University in 1997 and this was the first time since then that no students announced they were going to run.

Mills, Lacy give U.N.I.T.E.D. platform update

U.N.I.T.E.D. Initiative campaigned with 33 platform items. Some of the items the slate members knew would not be finished by the time their term was finished after Spring Break. Most are completed or will begin by the end of this summer. President Betsy Mills said she was appreciative of the executive cabinet members and Ball State University Student Government Association senators who have helped get the items started and completed.

Potholes pop BSU bus tires

Along Bethel Avenue between the Alumni Center and Northside Middle School, the winter weather helped create a pothole, Supervisor of Bus Operations Gary Moses said. At the time, he said, two Ball State University shuttle buses were driving at night and the drivers couldn't see the hole.

Thursday several Ball State University students will spend their evening with someone special, usually a significant other. While the majority of people only think about their boyfriend/girlfriend, Valentine's Day is more than flowers, heart-shaped candy and romance.

Police arrest two students at library

Two Ball State University students who were arrested at Bracken Library on charges of disorderly conduct have been released from Delaware County Jail on $1,000 bail, according to jail officials.

Forever Cardinals

For more than a decade five former Ball State University athletes had to wait to receive the university's highest athletics honor. With Friday's induction ceremony at the Alumni Center, the wait was finally over. Football's Brent Baldwin and Brad Maynard, men's tennis' John Noble, gymnastics' Sarah Mikrut (Doyle) and men's volleyball's Phil Eatherton were inducted into the Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame as the class of 2007-08 in front of family, friends, coaches and many others.

Anyone who witnessed Ball State University's 21-point dismantling of three-time defending Mid-American Conference champions Bowling Green a couple weeks ago realizes who the best women's basketball team in the conference is. On paper, no one can touch the Cardinals' athletic explosiveness on both ends of the court.

Mayor continues replacing officials

Newly appointed city officials will help keep Muncie clean and safe, according to Mayor Sharon McShurley. Since McShurley stepped into office in January, she said, she has replaced some officials, some have remained in office and some have not reapplied for their positions.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards remain in first with victory

Despite being called for a couple three-second violations for spending too much time in the lane, Ball State University's women's basketball players weren't about to abandon the paint area Saturday. That's the region of the court in which the Cardinals earned their keep, surviving a late scare to snap their two-game losing streak with an 80-64 victory against the University of Akron.

Two computers missing

Two computers intended to provide students with relief from long waits at the Amelia T. Wood Health Center were stolen before they were installed. Medical Director Kent Bullis said he filed reports late last week with Ball State police claiming two desktop computers and keyboards were stolen from a back office in the clinic.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Freshman emerges in victories

Freshman middle attacker J.D. Gasparovic said the most difficult thing for him about transitioning from high school to college volleyball this season was adjusting to the game's increased speed. After starting both matches for the Ball State University men's volleyball team this weekend, he said that transition is becoming easier.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Second-half run dooms Cardinals

Most of the season, Ball State University coach Billy Taylor has espoused the philosophy of creating offense by getting defensive stops. An early second-half scoring spurt by the University of Akron prevented the Cardinals from doing that Saturday night, resulting in a hole that Ball State couldn't get out of as it lost its sixth straight game, 70-61 to the Zips.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cards get biggest win of year

Wearing a black swimming cap, a red Ball State University jacket and a aqua-colored towel, Addison Del Rio walked through a tunnel of her teammates Saturday as they shot confetti through the air and fans cheered. Del Rio and the other senior women of the swimming and diving team: Michelle Huang, Valerie McGowan and Stephanie Paul, were presented with bouquets of flowers and gift bags for their senior day.

ROTC cadets dine in style

Cardinal Battalion Army ROTC cadets lined up in Army uniform, accompanied by dates in cocktail dresses and tuxedos Friday evening at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center. Cadets planned and presented the annual ROTC "Dining Out" ceremony to more than a dozen tables of fellow cadets, Army officers and their companions in Cardinal Hall.

As of last week, when Governor Mitt Romney dropped out of the race, it has become quite apparent John McCain is not the first choice of most Republicans. While he did remarkably well on Super Tuesday and has mathematically all but sealed the nomination, McCain still has to convince many Republicans he is the right man for the job.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Doubles dominate in win

The Ball State University women's tennis team played pretty in pink Saturday when it defeated visiting Valparaiso University, 6-1. The match was the kickoff of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics' "Think Pink" weekend, and the squad wore pink T-shirts to help promote breast cancer awareness.

BSU station to be aired off campus

CardinalVision57, Ball State University's student-run television station, has begun broadcasting to the Muncie community. Promotions Director Joe Huber said broadcasting on basic cable makes sense for Ball State, which is well-known for its telecommunications department.

GYMNASTICS: Cards fall to BGSU

An abundance of falls cost the Ball State University gymnastics team its first win of the season Friday against Bowling Green State University. The Cardinals lost by a score 188.100-187.050 dropping their season record to 0-5 and 0-4 in the Mid-American Conference.
