Police arrest two students at library

UPDATE:

Two Ball State University students who were arrested at Bracken Library on charges of disorderly conduct have been released from Delaware County Jail on $1,000 bail, according to jail officials.

Gene Burton, director of public safety, said police arrested sophomore Keith Deibel and freshman Alex Dunning after a library staff member reported seeing them with a gun on the third floor.

After police seized the men and secured the situation, the officers determined the students were using a toy gun, Burton said.

The gun had an orange ring on the end of the barrel to indicate that it was a toy, Burton said, but it was too small and lightly-colored for police to notice from a distance.Arthur Hafner, dean of university libraries, said the students were rehearsing a scene from a play.

"This is a scary situation; it looks like a real situation and we don't know," Hafner said. "The library's response is to call for help. Our staff are very good at identifiying risks, and our campus security are very good about managing risk and they did the right thing."
