GYMNASTICS: Cards fall to BGSU

Little kinks continue for Ball State as falls lead to loss to Falcons

An abundance of falls cost the Ball State University gymnastics team its first win of the season Friday against Bowling Green State University.

The Cardinals lost by a score 188.100-187.050 dropping their season record to 0-5 and 0-4 in the Mid-American Conference.

Throughout the week, Ball State coach Nadalie Walsh said she had her gymnasts working on the little kinks in their routines. She said she hoped they would get the wobbles and small mistakes out of their performances and the scores would go up, then all they would have to do then is avoid falls. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they fell often against Bowling Green.

"They did a good job applying the things we worked on but just had a lot of fluke falls," Walsh said.

Sophomore Megan Howard performed well for the Cardinals, Walsh said. Howard competed in the vault, bars and beam exercises against Bowling Green and scored in the top three for her team in each event.

"I was more relaxed this meet than I normally am," she said. "During the week we did a lot more work on cleaning up on things ... I just thought to myself I have nothing to lose so I'm just going to do what I do every day."

Another Cardinal gymnast to perform well was sophomore Bibiana Rodriguez, Walsh said. Rodriguez scored the highest of all performers on the bars with a 9.650, making her the one Cardinal to earn top honors in an event.
