Ball State Sustainability Initiatives Timeline
1991 – Green-1 Committee is appointed
1999 – Former President John E. Worthen signs the Talloires Declaration, a ten-point action plan for incorporating sustainability and environmental literacy at colleges and universities
2000 – Green-2 Committee is appointed
2000 – Council on the Environment (COTE) is created
2006 – Former President Jo Ann Gora becomes one of the first university presidents to sign the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, a promise to pursue climate neutrality
2009 – Ball State initiates its plan to convert to a geothermal heating and cooling system
2010 – The Climate Action Plan 2010-2050, which lays out the university’s plan to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, is adopted
2011 – Ball State’s sustainability minor is approved
2014 – Former President Paul W. Ferguson starts his term at Ball State
2014 – Julie Hopwood, senior advisor to the president, joins COTE as a presidential representative
Summer 2015 – Ball State’s geothermal plan enters its final stages
December 2015 – Ferguson creates the President’s Sustainability Working Group to examine whether the university can reach carbon neutrality by 2030
Jan. 25, 2016 – The Board of Trustees announces Ferguson’s resignation via email and Terry King, the provost and vice president of academic affairs, assumes the position of interim president
Sustainability has long been a priority at Ball State, something often furthered by university leaders.

After a video was released of a racist chant by members of an Oklahoma University fraternity, Ball State Sociology Department Chairperson Melinda Messineo said there are several factors that contribute to the culture behind the members' actions.
