Speaker discusses misconceptions society harbors toward disabled

Many people feel awkward when they think about people with disabilities, Ball State University graduate student Sara Mahoney told a crowd Monday in the Forum Room of the L.A. Pittenger Student Center. "They don't know whether to pity them or feel sorry for them," Mahoney said.

Students create banner in effort to stop hate

Almost 700 silver signatures from Ball State University students and faculty filled a large blue "Stop Hate" banner in Teachers College Monday. For Ball State graduate student Tim Gordon, who envisioned collecting between 2,000 and 3,000 signatures during the next two weeks, that's a huge step toward the goal set by nine counseling psychology graduate students.

Dear Editor, I think Topher McKim's Friday column - "Ball State's Health Zone doesn't help students ward off the 'freshman 15'" - was like an arrow headed in the right direction, but it totally missed the mark. There are many valid grievances against Ball State University's Dining Services, but McKim missed them.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State ready to welcome

The Ball State University men's volleyball team will play the Central State Marauders tonight in Worthen Arena. The Marauders, a team in its first year of organized competitive volleyball, will become Division I next season. The game will give the Cardinals a chance to compete against some younger players.

Senate to vote on changesto calendar

After more than five years in the planning stages, Ball State University could be steps away from eliminating Saturday finals from the 2006-07 academic calendar. The University Senate is scheduled to vote on the proposal Thursday at its 4 p.m. meeting in Cooper Nursing Building, room 160.

Despite daughters' wishes, two moms grab life by the handlebars

When Deborah Hummer's husband bought two Harleys within one year, she thought her husband had lost his mind. At age 48, three years and one divorce later, Hummer is now Muncie's Ladies of Harleys president and has ridden her bike from Indiana to Georgia, from Georgia to California and back to Indiana.

University employee files complaint for racial harassment on the job

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is investigating a complaint recently filed by a black Ball State University employee concerning racial harassment on the job. Maetta Vance, a 16-year employee of University Banquet and Catering, filed the federal complaint in early January, detailing how her supervisors and a white female truck driver discriminated against her verbally and physically, said Mark Waterfill, Vance's attorney from Indianapolis.

TRACK AND FIELD: Team finishes second in outdoor season opener

The Ball State University track and field team opened its season Saturday at the Southern Illinois Classic. The Cardinals finished as runner-ups at the Carbondale, Ill., classic, ending up just nine points short of Illinois State, with a score of 138. Highlighting the day for the Cardinals was sophomore Voni Ferguson, who won the 200-meter (24.

GYMNASTICS: Season ends in MAC championship

The Ball State University gymnastics team landed in last place at the Mid-American Conference championship Saturday, ending its season. The Cardinals finished with a final score of 188.225. Ball State held one of the last two places in every event with 47.

The legislation to eliminate Saturday finals - and thereby alter the entire Fall Semester calendar - has wound through a number of organizations and committees throughout the several years it's been under debate. All of the people who've worked on the plan have made changes to it, and on Thursday the University Senate will make a decision on the latest suggested plan - the most complicated one so far.

Ball State University students are getting the chance to recycle through Recyclemania, a nationwide recycling competition. "We want students to carry themselves in such a way that they respect their environments," Brian Tomlinson, chair of the Environmental Action Team, said.

CLIMBING THE WALLS: Kindergartners shouldn't have full day

Gov. Mitch Daniels plans on making full-day kindergarten his top priority during the 2007 General Assembly, despite unsuccessful attempts from two previous Indiana governors. With budget and campaign issues no longer factors, this initiative is being hailed by the House Education Committee and the state school superintendent - but at a major cost to the children this will affect.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals face another disappointing weekend

The Ball State University men's volleyball team started off the season with an 11-game winning streak that made it the only undefeated Division I team. A little over a month later it has struggled down the stretch, winning four of the last nine games. On Friday, the Cardinals lost 3-1 (30-27, 31-29, 28-30, 30-19) and moved to 15-5 (4-4 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association), while Loyola improves to 17-6 (7-1 MIVA).

MEN'S TENNIS: Ball State finishes in fourth place at Boise State Invitational

The No. 70 Ball State University men's tennis team lost its final match of the Boise State Invitational, but the team's overall performance was good enough for a fourth-place finish in the three-day, 16-team tournament. The Cardinals started the tournament Thursday, defeating a pair of foes in Lewis and Clark State College and Central Florida.
