TRACK AND FIELD: Team finishes second in outdoor season opener

The Ball State University track and field team opened its season Saturday at the Southern Illinois Classic.

The Cardinals finished as runner-ups at the Carbondale, Ill., classic, ending up just nine points short of Illinois State, with a score of 138.

Highlighting the day for the Cardinals was sophomore Voni Ferguson, who won the 200-meter (24.86) and 400-meter dash (55.74). Other winners for the Cardinals included Jennifer McCoy (100 hurdles, 14.19), Tamelca Lewis (Triple Jump, 39-10 -+), and Jill Scully (1,500, 4:36.07).

Although the team didn't win the meet, she was happy with the results, Coach Sue Parks said.

"It was a good start to our outdoor season," Parks said. "We wanted to win the meet but Illinois State opened their season last weekend at Alabama and I think that they were just a bit sharper than us at this point."

In addition, the 4x400 relay team won with a time of 3:51.92.

"[Illinois State has] a great team and I knew they would be tough to beat," Parks said. "The weather was not perfect but we competed hard. We have barely been on the outdoor track to train so we were a bit rusty."
