Women's Week features presentations, films, play focusing on community issues

BSU President to lead question, answer session to address concerns

Instead of focusing on one or two issues for Women's Week, the Women's Studies program is providing a variety of programs to attract people across campus.

Ball State University Women's Week 2006 marks the end of the National Women's History Month with discussions and presentations on topics from women in the workplace to health and sex issues.

Sixteen speakers from Ball State and around the country will participate, but the week will also include an art exhibition, music night and a play, Top Girls, directed by Ball State senior Kevin McCarty.

"It's all about the sacrifices people have given up to make it in the world and be successful," McCarty said. "When I first started I went to the library and went to the women's studies section. I didn't just attack the play from a male perspective."

Ball State President Jo Ann Gora will also lead a discussion on the "The Challenges Women Face in the 21st Century" on 10 a.m. Tuesday in L.A. Pittenger Student Center, Cardinal Hall B. Gora has spoken at Women's Month events wince the 1980s she said, but this will be her first time at Ball State.

Instead of giving a speech, she said she hoped session attendees could talk about issues on campus and she could share some of her life experiences.

"I always resist the notion of women's issues because I think that the issues that are frequently labeled as women's issues should be people's issues - the concerns of everyone," Gora said. Those issue include childcare, health care, education and more, she said.

All of the events are free, except for the play, Top Girls, on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Admission costs $2, but will be waived with the donation of new or gently used business clothes. The donations will go to the Dress for Success campaign to benefit women breaking into the professional workforce.

"The more kinds of activities going on the more people are likely to get engaged and have good conversations," Gora said.
