With the election coming up, the political parties are gearing up for the final stretch of the campaigns.
Republican Brad Oliver, a candidate for Indiana House District 34, will receive a large boost to his campaign this afternoon with a visit from Rep. Mike Pence.
At 1:30 p.m. at the S.A. Boyce Corporation, Pence will formally announce his support for Oliver in the district that includes Muncie.
Pence is the representative for the 6th district of Indiana but he is running for governor, on a platform he calls his "Roadmap for Indiana."
According to Pence's website, roadmapforindiana.com, his mission is "to make Indiana the state that works, a Pence administration will promote private sector job growth, develop world-class schools, protect taxpayers and support Hoosier families."
There are six principals laid out on Pence's website: "increasing private sector employment," attracting new investments to Indiana, "improving the math and reading skills of elementary students, increasing graduation rates, improving the quality of the Hoosier workforce" and improving the health of families.
Pence will offer his support for Oliver as part of his plan to elect leaders, said Christy Denault, a representative for Pence.
"This is another stop on [Pence's] tour to promote the 'Roadmap' and campaign for local leaders like Oliver," Denault said.
Oliver was appointed by Gov. Mitch Daniels to the Indiana Professional Standards Advisory Board, "where he helped to pass new content area teaching standards and new building and district administrator standards," according to his website bradoliver2012.com.
The website also spells out Oliver's views.
"Our current system of education is broken," the website says.
The site says Oliver wants to give teachers more tools to be successful and to give parents more choices if their child's school is not meeting their standards.
Oliver's website says he wants to strengthen private jobs, stop abuse of public programs and promote fiscal change. Oliver is looking to complete his goals by cutting government spending, taxes and regulations on business and industry.
Rick Spangler, a representative for Oliver, said Oliver will speak about the issues listed on his website.
"[Oliver] will be talking about education and jobs, specifically bringing out the strong points [of Muncie]," Spangler said. "We want to leverage the things that we have in Muncie to grow business."
The S.A. Boyce Company, where the event is taking place, is a Muncie area building, restoration and maintenance contracting company.
"[S.A. Boyce] is the type of business that [Oliver] likes, a relatively new business that has been quite successful," Spangler said.
The College Republicans are excited about the endorsement from Pence.
"We were rather impressed with the way that [Oliver] handled himself and held his own [in the debate with Sue Errington]," College Republicans President Kayleigh Mohler said. "We all love Mike Pence; we actually have several people who say he is their favorite politician."
