FIELD HOCKEY: Ranked teams stifle BSU offense

Ball State University's field hockey team spent most of the Labor Day weekend playing defense. The Cardinals were outshot 78 to 18 in three games, including 26 to 1 against Northeastern University, and lost three times over the Labor Day weekend. All three of the Cardinals' opponents - the University of Louisville, Northeastern and Northwestern University - were nationally-ranked teams, as Louisville is currently No.

SOCCER: Cardinals fall from regional rankings

The Ball State University women's soccer team (1-1, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) fell out of the Soccerbuzz.com regional rankings Tuesday. The Cardinals were ranked 13th in the Great Lakes Region when the pre-season poll was released August 14. There are 55 teams in the region.

Young. That is how coach Dave Boos describes the 2007 Ball State University women's volleyball team. The team has two seniors and one junior. The other 11 players on the team are sophomores and freshmen. The immaturity of the team showed this weekend in the Hofstra Invitational.

A bowl game. That's what Ball State University fans want and expect from the 2007 football team. With Thursday's loss to Miami University, that mission became a whole lot harder. To have a realistic shot at a bowl game the Cardinals must finish the season 7-5 or better, because no 6-6 Mid-American Conference team is going to receive a bowl berth.

Late in the afternoon Friday, you may have noticed a group of about thirty bicycles in procession down McKinley Avenue. Critical Mass, as the event was called, raised awareness about the myriad of transportation choices beyond cars while also asserting the legality of bike-riding in the street.

Movie plays despite troubles

A broken projector put a damper on Ball State University Programs Board's plans to show "Blades of Glory" in high definition Friday. Noah Meadors, president of UPB, said this was supposed to be the first time UPB screened a film for Friday Night Filmworks in high definition, but the projector in Pruis Hall broke and was replaced by one without high definition capabilities.

Program educates, simulates alcohol's effects

Sober Ball State University students played drunken putt-putt Friday during the kickoff for Party Smart at the corner of McKinley and Riverside avenues. Peer health educator Jennifer Shull said students experienced what it felt like to be impaired while trying to use motor skills.

Two fires not caused by code violations

Smoldering cigarettes have caused two fires at Walnut Manor Apartments in less than two years. Most recently, on Aug. 21, at approximately 8:30 a.m. a fire caused by a lit cigarette on a couch started a blaze that took about two hours to get under control, according to staff reports.

FOOTBALL: Myles Brand attends game

As Ball State University opened its 2007 football season with a 14-13 loss to Miami University, 15,488 fans looked on, including a school record 7,885 students. Among the crowd was the President of the NCAA Myles Brand. Brand, who said he goes to a college football game about half the weekends during the football season, said he was not in attendance because of the recent NCAA violations by the Ball State University athletic department.

Record number of students attend stadium reopening

A record number of students flocked to Ball State University's football home-opener at the newly-renovated Scheumann Stadium Thursday. The student section set a Ball State record for attendance at a football game with 7,875 fans packed into the east bleachers, despite the Cardinals' loss.
