Quarterback Brent Baldwin could not be much of a vocal leader during the first half of the 1995 Ball State University football season. Trailing late in the first game of the season at Miami University, Baldwin drove his team down the field and eventually found himself facing second and goal. The then-junior ran an option to the end and collided with one of the opposing safeties.

Judge denies special election

Judge Joel Roberts dismissed Democrats' petition for a special election today, according to Republican Party Attorney David Brooks. Democrat Party Attorney Michael Quirk filed the petition after Jim Mansfield's 11-vote victory over Republican Sharon McShurley was overturned in an official mayoral election recount last December, he said.

Departments have uneven arrest results

Police departments experienced uneven results in the number of arrests they made during Muncie Gras this weekend. Gene Burton, director of public safety for Ball State University, said the police department arrested nine people, which is about average compared to recent weeks, but the department did not increase patrols during Muncie Gras.

Duplain wins civil trial

INDIANAPOLIS - A former Ball State University police officer did not use excessive force when he shot and killed a Ball State student, a jury stated Monday. The jury ruled in favor of Robert Duplain in the civil lawsuit the family of Michael McKinney brought against him four years ago.

Mr. Phi-Nominal returns to Pruis

Eleven Ball State University men will vie for the title of Mr. Phi-Nominal and a $500 prize tonight at Pruis Hall. Alpha Phi Sorority President Lauren Madden said contestants would display talents for a panel of judges such as singing, dancing and jumping rope for points.

Cards scheduled to play Colonels

Four months into its season, the Ball State University men's basketball team now knows who it will play Feb. 23. ESPN announced Monday the Cardinals will play a road game against Eastern Kentucky as part of the 2008 BracketBusters. Eastern Kentucky (11-10, 8-5 Ohio Valley Conference) has won five of its last six games and in second place in the conference.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards come up short against No. 7 Stanford

The Ball State University men's volleyball team traveled to California in search of national respect. The team fell four points short of earning that respect, coach Joel Walton said. No. 7 Stanford University rallied from a two-game deficit to defeat Ball State 28-30, 25-30, 30-22, 31-29, 15-11 on Saturday.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards struggle to find groove without guard

Wincing in pain, Audrey McDonald slowly got up after she fell hard onto her left elbow midway through the first half in Sunday's game against the University of Buffalo. After the Ball State University guard walked off the court, the Cardinals offense with six players averaging in double figures was held to 20 points in the first half leading to the 73-62 loss and Ball State's second straight Mid-American Conference defeat of the season.

Senators look to increase awareness about issues

Student Government Association senators got back to business after a week off for Thanksgiving Break. While meetings normally consist of caucus and committee reports, Wednesday's meeting went by quickly because only committee reports were given. Below is a breakdown of what the committee chairpersons told the senators: Academic Affairs: Chairman Carson Lance said he sent e-mails to college deans, assistant deans and chairpersons to get feedback on mandatory teacher evaluations.

Muncie Gras attendance increases

Mild weather brought about four times more Muncie Gras customers than last year, according to Kent Shuff, owner of Vera Mae's Bistro. Muncie Gras 2007 was plagued by bitter cold temperatures, causing potential customers to stay home instead of heading downtown, Shuff said.
