FOOTBALL: Wolfe runs wild over Ball State defense

Northern Illinois University tailback Garrett Wolfe set a personal, Northern Illinois and Scheumann Stadium record by rushing for 353 yards as the Huskies defeated Ball State 40-28. The Heisman Trophy candidate scored three touchdowns on runs of 51, 48 and 53.

FIELD HOCKEY: Penalty stroke gives Cardinals victory

During Thursday's practice, the Ball State University field hockey team spent about 30 minutes practicing penalty strokes.-á Little did they know how big that practice would become. Friday, forward Carla Chiampi scored the game-winning goal on a penalty stroke four minutes into overtime as the Cardinals defeated Central Michigan University 2-1.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Lack of consistency hurts team

Ball State University women's tennis team was plagued by a lack of consistency at the Ball State Invitational this weekend.-á Friday, the Cardinals came out strong and won all three of their doubles matches. The pairs of Haly Calderwood and Christine Stromberg, Jennifer Pollack and Polina Askerko and Emma Retter and Katherine Rist all recorded victories.

Seniors win international award for work

Two Ball State University seniors won an award in Ireland for their work improving the reliability of computer systems at Indianapolis International Airport. Zac Adkins and Howard Wickelman entered a Business Fellows project from last year into the International Business Informatics Case Study Competition, which took place during the week of Sept.

FOOTBALL: Freshman plays well as starter

Although the team didn't pull out a win, Ball State quarterback Nate Davis made the most of his first career start and also gave the Cardinals a glimpse of what the next four years could be like. "He has such a great arm and poise for a freshman," Northern Illinois coach Joe Novak said.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cards continue play at tournament

Joe Epkey is a "lucky loser," with emphasis on the word lucky, not loser.-á Epkey lost in the qualifying round of the All-American Pre-Qualifying Tennis Championships but will advance in the tournament due to a provision in the rules. Epkey was selected as one of three individuals to advance despite a loss because of other players withdrawing for reasons such as injury.

Students not stoked for Strokes

A thousand tickets have been sold for tonight's Strokes concert at Emens Auditorium, which seats 3,400. Emens has had trouble marketing the show because the band is not widely played on radio and MTV, Darcy Wood, associate director for marketing at Emens said.

Some of Michele Newsome's earliest memories are of spending time with her grandmother before she died from breast cancer when Newsome was three years old. To prevent other people from suffering the same loss, Newsome is raising money for breast cancer awareness - and a cure.

With all of the defensive troubles surrounding the Ball State University football team, it's the offense that has generated the most talk this week. It is likely that freshman Nate Davis will get the starting nod at quarterback Saturday against Northern Illinois University, according to multiple players on the football team.

Core Curriculum report goes to subcommittee

In 2008, the core curriculum courses could go beyond the introductory level, requiring immersive learning and courses about diversity and environmental awareness. At Thursday's University Senate meeting, the University Core Curriculum Task Force II submitted a report of the proposed core curriculum structure, the result of more than three years of work.

Students abuse Ruckus

Within a month of its launch at Ball State University, 6,421 students went online to download music from the Ruckus server. However, some students are abusing the system by stripping files of their anti-piracy coding. The software Ruckus uses is Windows-based and is not compatible with old Apple technology that doesn't run both the MAC OS and Windows.

Withdrawal policy update approved by University Senate

Ball State University could soon be changing from two withdrawal periods to one. The proposal has yet to be approved by the President and the Board of Trustees, but it passed through University Senate with no opposition. "There was a great deal of inconsistency throughout the university regarding the policy," Bruce Hozeski, University Senate chairman, said.

Linebacker Brad Seiss ready to play again

It was a simple screen pass. The ball-hawking middle linebacker got the early read and sprinted across the slippery gridiron to smash the running back before he got anywhere. He made his final step, and his planted left foot stuck in the ground just a split second too long.

Talk about a long lunch break. Travel Dimensions' window icon, Zoe, is back in the office as of Thursday, owners said. "She was at the door when I came in at 8:20 [Thursday] morning," Kibra Maxwell, a senior counselor at store, said. The brown and black tabby was nowhere to be found Wednesday, sickening the office staff of the Village store.

Voting is how we decide as a society what we feel should be done, and you'll never hear more about it then around election season. Those who didn't seem to care too much about exercising their rights before, suddenly become indignant about their feeling that absolutely everyone should vote.
