Ball State University women's volleyball team kicked off their first home Mid-American Conference match last night against the University of Toledo with a win. With the victory, the Cardinals improved their conference record to 2-1, even though Toledo played strong defensively.
"It was finally nice to be home," Julie Breivogel said.
The Cardinals started the match out strong with a win in their first game, but then they started to show inconsistency in their play in the second and third games.
Even though they lost focus, the Cardinals stayed positive throughout the whole match.
"We had a few ups and downs," Breivogel said. "Staying focused - that's one of our main goals - and staying positive."
Kelly Cochran said that the team once again came to play with its "A" game. The senior had another double-double with 20 kills and 17 digs. This makes two matches in a row that Cochran has had double-doubles.
The offense has become more consistent with Cochran's contributions. Cochran showed that she was a senior leader tonight by helping the team stay positive throughout the whole match.
"I play all the way around," Cochran said. "So it is important that I bring both aspects, hitting and digging."
Cochran was not the only offensive player who shined in last night's match. Breivogel led the team with 24 kills. The freshman has been a key player all season, and thus far in conference games she has shown that she is turning it up a notch.
"I think Julie and Kelly did a great offensive job," assistant coach Heidi Zickgraf said.
Angie Parrell was a team player with 56 assists. Head coach Randy Litchfield has said throughout the week that one area the team needed improvement in was setting, and Parrell showed tonight that practice this week has made the team's setting more consistent.
However Parrell, being a team player, commented that without teammates like Breivogel and Cochran to set to she would not have been as successful tonight in her assists.
"[Kelly and Julie] are both playing so consistently right now," Parrell said. "I know that every time I set to them it will almost always be a kill."
