BSU launches record label

Ball State University introduced Sursa Performance Hall last year as part of the new Music Instruction Building, and now the venue is being used for more than just concerts. Musicians can record their compact discs there, too. Ideas of Ball State's record label, Beneficence Recordings, began a year and a half ago when the university started putting needed elements in place.

Annual show marked by musical diversity, variety of selections

The Ball State University Summer Chorus, a combined group of singers from Ball State University and the Muncie community, will perform a varied selection of works Tuesday, July 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Sursa Hall. Returning director Jeffrey Pappas said that this year's annual show will be marked by variety in musical selection as well as chorus members.

OUR VIEW: Where there's smoke

With the county-wide smoking ban going into effect Saturday, some Delaware County residents might be looking forward to the changes. This is a step in the right direction, but the ban isn't complete. The ban prohibits smoking everywhere except private clubs, free-standing bars and personal property.

Ethanol new fuel of choice for IRL

There will be something new for the 90th running of the Indianapolis 500 this year,-ábut most fans won't notice the addition. For the first time since 1965, the Indy Racing League is using a fuel other than methanol in the cars.-áThis year a blend of 10 percent ethanol and 90 percent methanol will be used.

Corvette makes eighth appearance as pace car

Lance Armstrong, the seven-time winner of the Tour de France, is geared up to drive the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 pace car at this weekend's running of the Indianapolis 500. The Corvette Z06 is the 17th Chevy to be announced as the pace car and the eighth time a Corvette will start the race.

THE DORK REPORT: Americans must end exceptionalism for United States to improve reputation

According to a YouGov poll for The Daily Telegraph, a British newspaper, Britons have become tired of a country they view as a "vulgar empire builder." That country is not China, Iran, North Korea or Russia - it's the United States of America. A further 81 percent of those polled said Bush's championing of democracy in the Middle East was little more than "a cover for the pursuit of American self-interests.

Kim Jong Il is not exactly the kind of guy we can trust. He is the ruthless leader of a suffering country, and we cannot sit idly by while he threatens our way of life. This is a dangerous man, and we cannot rely on his good judgment to keep us safe. The United Nations seems to be dancing around doing something about Kim Jong Il.

QUESTIONABLE CONUNDRUMS: Lifetime gun permits put public in danger

Indiana is the first state to offer lifetime handgun permits. My only hope for the future is that Indiana also becomes the first state to invalidate all lifetime handgun permits in the interest of public safety. Indiana, like most states, requires handgun owners to have a permit to transport or carry their weapons.

Muncie doesn't have the theft issues New York City does, but Ball State University isn't as crime-free as some might think. Students need to be aware of their surroundings and be sure to act accordingly. Locking your car and keeping your bicycle properly stored is a necessary part of being on or near a college campus - or any populated area in general.

Minnetrista Cultural Center celebrated an enchanting new take on an annual summertime event for faerie lovers of all ages and imaginations Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. The event, "Faeries, Sprites and Lights 2006," offered a new twist on an old Minnetrista tradition of faerie celebration and exploration.

'Phil'osophy: Battle of the baseball movie stars

The greatest All-Star event in all of sports takes place Monday night when SteroidFest 2006,-áer, I mean, Home Run Derby, hits the field in Pittsburgh. It will feature a star-studded cast of baseball's best musclemen, and David Ortiz, Ryan Howard and others will fight to see which player gets the most Chris Berman-isms during their at-bats.

When Trent Walker moved into his off-campus home last year, he and his roommates had no idea how susceptible their most frequent mode of transportation would be to theft. "I had two bikes stolen, and two of my roommates had theirs stolen within a period of two months," Walker said.

English has 42 sounds spelled 400 different ways, according to the American Literacy Council - and there you were thinking French was a pain in the ass. Lucky for us, a few people continue to fight the system that is the English language, hoping to bring us a more simplified way of spelling.

Library begins work on new caf+â-¬

Construction on the Bookmark Caf+â-¬ will soon be underway. Liz Poore, assistant director of operations for Dining Service, said workers were preparing to remove the contents of the vending area in Bracken Library, beginning the week of July 24. Poore said the vending machines will be relocated to the basement of the library and new tile will be put in.

OUR VIEW: Questions over coffee

With the addition of a caf+â-¬, Bracken Library has the potential to become a hangout spot. While Dining Service and the library should be commended for bringing in a new service for students, officials need to keep in mind the problems that could arise. The Bookmark Caf+â-¬ could provide students with an opportunity to work in the library through mealtimes, but there is a potential for abuse -¡- using the caf+â-¬ to spend 36 hours on a caffeine-fueled studying binge isn't the point.
