WOMEN'S GOLF: Team sets new records in first round

The tournament to decide the Mid-American Conference championship is seven months away, but after Monday, coach Katherine Mowat likes her team's chances to win a title. The Ball State University women's golf team shot a school-record 294 and is in first place following the first round of the MAC Tournament Preview in Indianapolis.

Chemical spill closes Cooper Physical Science Building

Cooper Physical Science Building's basement will be closed until at least 6 p.m. tonight because of a chemical spill. Ball State University Police said after the spill is cleaned up, the building will need time to ventilate before it is safe. Graduate Assistant Michelle Tolle said she was cleaning a room where chemicals were stored when one of the other two people in the room spilled a four-liter bottle of ammonium hydroxide and paradichlorabenzyne, which is noxious.

Schedule looks good for BSU basketball

The Ball State University basketball schedules are out, and they look good. Maybe not for Ball State's win-loss column, but for the fans, the schedule couldn't look much better. Both the men's and women's basketball schedules feature a plethora of quality opponents.

Fraternity cookout begins recruitment

The Ball State University chapter of Alpha Phi Omega fraternity's cookout gave students the chance to meet current members and learn details about the organization. Nitina Kolliesuah, vice president of service, said the co-ed service fraternity provided free burgers, hotdogs, chips and sodas to about 50 students Saturday at University Green.

Waterdaze raises money for Riley's

Theta Chi fraternity raised more than $1,200 for Riley's Hospital for Children during its annual Waterdaze event Saturday in LaFollette Field. Theta Chi member Caleb Boucher said 32 teams competed in four games, which included a water bucket toss, a water balloon toss, a Slip N' Slide and a wet-head relay.

Camp teaches career options

Ball State University accounting students had the opportunity to participate in a boot camp experience, but without the drill instructors and physical exertion. The department of accounting offered Boot Camp: Accounting Basics Training, which gave accounting students information about their future careers, on Saturday.

The Ball State University Greening of the Campus VII conference, which focuses on making college campuses environmentally friendly, went well, but few students attended, Robert Koester, director of energy research, education and service professor of architecture, said.

FOOTBALL: Quarterback bounces back

Following a subpar showing in the first game of the season, Ball State University second-year quarterback Nate Davis waited all week to prove his opening performance against Miami University was a fluke. On the first offensive play of Saturday's game at Eastern Michigan University, Davis got off to a good start.

FOOTBALL: Cards' starting kicker spot up for grabs

After missing half of six field goals attempts to begin the season, Ball State University redshirt freshman place kicker Jake Hogue might not be attempting field goals next week at Navy. Cardinals' coach Brady Hoke said Monday he had opened the competition for the kicking position Sunday night between Hogue and backup Ian McGarvey.

FOOTBALL: Cornerback makes impact

When redshirt cornerback Trey Lewis arrived at Ball State University three years ago, the Cardinals' defense was in desperate need of improvement. The Cardinals ranked last in the Mid-American Conference the last two years in total defense and no higher than eighth in scoring, passing or rushing defense.

Letterman visits BSU for building dedication

Red and white confetti fell and the thunderous tones of Ball State University's fight song played Friday afternoon as David Letterman cut the ribbon outside the building carrying his name. An estimated crowd of about 5,000 people gathered outside the David Letterman Communication and Media Building to watch the event, Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for Marketing and Communications said.

SOCCER: Cardinals' goalkeeper suffers injury during Friday's game

Although the Ball State University women's soccer team was 1-1 this weekend, it actually suffered two losses. Ball State (2-2, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) lost to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro 1-0 Sunday and defeated Florida Atlantic University 2-1 Friday at the FAU Kickoff Classic.

MEN'S GOLF: Cardinals in fifth after 36 holes

The Ball State University men's golf team teed off their fall season Monday at the Piper Intercollegiate in Bowling Green, Ohio. After 36 holes, Ball State is in fifth place out of 15 teams. Junior Andrew Rhodes leads the Cardinals with a score of 68 from the second round.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: BSU tries to stop skid

The next chance for the Ball State women's volleyball team to snap its school-record seven-match losing streak comes today in Indianapolis against IUPUI. The Cardinals are 1-7 on the season, marking the worst start in Ball State history, and most recently lost both home matches in the Ball State Classic this past weekend.

FIELD HOCKEY: Ball State falls to nationally ranked Hoosiers

Ball State University's field hockey team didn't come out on top Saturday, but the team said they believed the result marks major progress in their final non-conference game before the Mid-American Conference season begins. No. 19 Indiana University defeated Ball State 2-0 "Today was a turning point," forward Brooke MacGillivary said.

FOOTBALL: Linebacker wins MAC Player of the Week

Two days after recording 12 tackles in a 38-16 win at Eastern Michigan, Ball State University linebacker Bryant Haines was named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week Monday. Haines' 12 tackles led a defense that limited the Eagles to 252 yards offensively and a single offensive touchdown.
