Two days after recording 12 tackles in a 38-16 win at Eastern Michigan, Ball State University linebacker Bryant Haines was named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week Monday.
Haines' 12 tackles led a defense that limited the Eagles to 252 yards offensively and a single offensive touchdown. Haines' performance came after he led the Cardinals with nine tackles against Miami University in Ball State's season-opening loss.
Cardinals' coach Brady Hoke said Haines' production against the Eagles was better than its performance in the first game.
"I talked to Haines after the first game because I didn't think he played as well as he needed to play," Hoke said. "But I thought he really improved his game against Eastern Michigan."
The win helped improve Ball State's season and MAC record to 1-1, and the Cardinals are 1-0 in the MAC West Division.
Haines said he has been happy with the Cardinals' production on defense during the first two games of the season.
"I feel like the defense has been playing good," Haines said. "We have a few errors that we need to correct, but we've kept together as a defense and that's the key."
