THE DORK REPORT: Drinking age should be lowered to 18

I'm a server at a restaurant that serves alcohol, which means I play a major role in getting people drunk. It also means, however, that I occasionally encounter people younger than 21 who attempt to buy alcohol with fake IDs. Under Indiana state law, selling alcohol to a minor, even unknowingly, constitutes a Class C misdemeanor.

Ball State University's men's basketball team will look to turn around a four-game losing streak as they return home to play intrastate rival Indiana State University. The Cardinals, who finally had a breather after playing five games in eight days, have dropped their last four straight games, including three road matches.

From Staff Reports Get ready for the camera before you go out to the bars this weekend, as Trish Stratus and Wee Man have arranged to hit the Village bars with a camera crew in tow. Producers of "Armed and Famous" talked with managers of Dill Street and The Chug about bringing some of the show's celebrities out to drink with Ball State University students and Muncie residents.

Senate looks to improve course request

Even if they technically pass, students may fail classes if they don't take the required pre-requisite courses. University Senate passed a motion on Thursday to possibly install a pre-requisite tracking system for the whole university that would prevent students from enrolling in incorrect classes.

Campus groups commemorate World AIDS Day

The chance of someone between the ages of 13 and 24 getting HIV increased 42 percent between 2000 and 2004, according to the Center for Disease Control. To raise awareness of the issues involved with HIV and AIDS, faculty from the Amelia T. Wood Health Center, along with several student organizations, have arranged a campus-wide commemoration of World AIDS Day today.

Student hospitalized after car accident

A Ball State University student remains at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in stable condition after crashing into a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction on Interstate-69 Tuesday night, according to a press release from the Indiana State Police and hospital officials.

BSU opens center in Indianapolis

While students have been attending the Ball State University Indianapolis Center since May, community leaders and faculty celebrated it Wednesday night at the grand opening ceremony. President Jo Ann Gora and Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson attended the opening, which included a multimedia presentation highlighting partnerships between businesses and the university.

SGA to vote on bylaws concerning applications

To help keep future problems with Student Government Association Senate appointments from happening, legislation amending the bylaws is being voted on by senators next week. If passed, the amendment, which was proposed at the weekly meeting Wednesday, would create a checks and balances system for the credentials boards to follow when looking at student applications.

JUST LISTEN: Armed and stupid, welcome to Muncie

While many Ball State University students began making their trip home last week for Thanksgiving Break, Muncie officials announced that a new reality television show would be filmed in Muncie tentatively titled "Armed and Famous." The show's premise includes celebrities training with the Muncie Police Department to become short-term officers - enacting swift justice on townies willing to stand in the face of the law.

OUR VIEW: Room to compete

Most Mid-American Conference schools have multi-use aquatic facilities where classes, athletic practices and community activities can take place at the same time. Ball State University has Lewellen Aquatic Center, a single-use facility. This means if the swimming and diving team practices, no one else can use the pool, Bob Thomas, co-coach for the men's and women's swimming and diving teams, said.

Opening of library cafe postponed

Ball State University's Bracken Library Bookmark Cafe's opening continues to be postponed because of delays in delivery of refrigerator compression parts. The initial planning for the caf+â-¬ began in September 2005, but delays have caused the caf+â-¬'s opening to be postponed, Liz Poore, assistant director of Residence Hall and Dining Services, said.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: First round

Nearly 1,000 swimmers, including three Ball State University athletes, will compete this weekend in the U.S. Open for men's and women's swimming at Purdue University. Michael Phelps, Lenny Krayzelburg and Amanda Weir are a few of the 20 current or past Olympians who will also compete in this pre-qualifying event for the Olympics.

Students play Twister for greek philanthropy

Arms and legs will twist and tangle while finding colored dots as Ball State University students compete in Kappa Delta sorority and Sigma Nu fraternity's Twister tournament Friday at 6 p.m. in Irving Gym 2. For its third year, Kappa Delta's philanthropic Twister tournament will be held in memory of former Kappa Delta member Lindsey Arnold who died of a brain tumor in November 2005, tournament co-chair Jessica Dinkelman said.

Building experience

Twelve students in an architecture class are creating a building with straw, a material not often associated with buildings. This unique fabrication process is common in the western states, but is not accepted yet in the Midwest, senior Dan Chase said. Students spent last semester researching the process of building a straw house, and over the summer professor Tim Gray received a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, which made the construction possible.

New curriculum unlikely to start in fall

It's possible, but not likely, that the new Ball State University Core Curriculum will be implemented by Fall 2008, as subcommittees of University Senate are still discussing the changes. The University Core Curriculum for the 21st Century proposal has been under review since Sept.
