Student hospitalized after car accident

Sophomore drove wrong direction on I-69 Tuesday night

A Ball State University student remains at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in stable condition after crashing into a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction on Interstate-69 Tuesday night, according to a press release from the Indiana State Police and hospital officials.

Sophomore Jeremiah Smith crashed head-on into a Chevy Blazer in Grant Country, according to the release. The other driver was Courtney Halsup from Fort Wayne, who has been released from Marion General Hospital, where she was taken after the crash.

Smith declined to comment about the incident.

Around 9 p.m. passing motorists reported to local police that a Jeep Cherokee was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of I-69, according to the reports. At the same time, Smith's girlfriend called the police to report she was talking to Smith on his cell phone and he was suicidal, reports said.

Police officers used lights to warn southbound traffic that Smith was driving on the wrong side of the road and to move oncoming traffic to the side of the highway to clear the road, according to police reports.

After the accident, Smith fled and officers from the Delaware County Sheriff's Office and the Gas City Police Department later spotted him walking along the interstate, according to reports. After Smith refused to stop walking and adhere to police orders, police used a Taser on him, reports said.

Smith was taken to Anderson Community Hospital, then later transported to Methodist.

After his release from the hospital, Smith will be arrested on suspicion of criminal recklessness with a motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, according to reports.
