The future of Muncie for the next four years, which will hold great consequences for the prolonged fate of the city, is being decided by less than a dozen votes. The Muncie mayoral election illustrates the importance of voting. Only nine votes separated the two candidates before the recount was requested in order to confirm the outcome.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Buffalo defeats both Cardinals' teams

Almost a month removed from its last competition, the Ball State University men's swimming and diving team lost at the University at Buffalo Saturday. The Bulls defeated the Cardinals 129 to 113. Junior Mark Augustyn won the 200-yard freestyle and sophomore Ben Battjes won the 50-yard freestyle.

Students gathered at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center on Friday to receive help guiding their lives down the path of success. Nine students attended the first Words of Wisdom book club meeting of the semester, which was organized by the Multicultural Center.

Journalist Lisa Ling's opening remarks were greeted with much applause from her audience Thursday night. "I can't stand the New England Patriots," she said. Aimee Ash, associate director of Student Life, said more than 750 students, some of whom sat in the aisles or stood against the walls, packed into Cardinal Hall at the L.

After experiencing its most successful season in program history, the Ball State University women's basketball team enters this season with a rougher road to travel in the 2007-08 campaign. Last season, Ball State played one non-conference opponent that participated in the NCAA Tournament.

Clinching a first round home match in the Mid-American Conference Tournament is the goal for the Ball State University women's volleyball team this weekend. The way the MAC Tournament works is the top four seeds get first round byes while seeds five through eight host seeds nine through 12.

CROSS COUNTRY: Cardinals to race at regional meet

Two weeks after finishing fifth at the Mid-American Conference championships, the Ball State University cross country team will face the top teams from the conference and region. The Cardinals will travel to Bloomington for the Great Lakes Regional Championship.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cards travel for MAC meets

For the first time this season, the Ball State University swimming and diving team will travel for a Mid-American Conference event. Last weekend the women's team began its MAC season with a loss to the University of Toledo and a win against Bowling Green State University at home.

Rock the Campus

Guitar Hero III rocked Ball State University's campus Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Whitinger Business Building Room 302. Eleven men and one boy participated in the tournament, and the winner took home Guitar Hero III. Jackson Moisan, 11, participated in the tournament, and said he has been playing Guitar Hero since he was 9, which was when the first version of Guitar Hero was sold.

IDEE sponsors digital exchange

Digital, cross-media projects were shown off during the Institute for Digital Entertainment and Education's digital exchange showcase this week in the David Letterman Communication and Media Building. Production Specialist Jessica Seaton said IDEE had the showcase to inform students and faculty about what the institute does and what it wants to do.

Thompson purchased basketballs

As the season begins for the Ball State University basketball team, allegations by former coach Ronny Thompson still linger and university records indicate at least one of them is true. In a column by Michael Wilbon in the Washington Post, Thompson said the situation at Ball State was so bad he had to buy basketballs for the team.

Stork bandits bust birthing center's bird

Severed wooden legs are all that remain of the mascot that nested on the front lawn of Expectations Women's Health & Childbearing Center. Barb Bechtel, certified nursing midwife for Expectations, said employees and the Muncie Police Department are searching for "Gregory Peck," the six-foot-tall, wooden stork that perches outside the center to announce births.
