Two weeks after finishing fifth at the Mid-American Conference championships, the Ball State University cross country team will face the top teams from the conference and region.
The Cardinals will travel to Bloomington for the Great Lakes Regional Championship. The meet is at 12:15 p.m. Saturday at the Indiana Cross Country Championship Course.
At its last meet, Ball State finished fifth at the MAC championships following Ohio University, the University of Akron, Miami University and the University of Toledo.
This week the Cardinals face a field that includes No. 8 Michigan State University, No. 9 the University of Michigan and No. 23 the University of Wisconsin.
The top two teams at the regional will qualify for the NCAA Championship meet Nov. 19 at the LaVern Gibson Golf Course in Terre Haute. The NCAA will then select at-large teams Sunday.
Also, the first four athletes who are not on a qualifying team will automatically qualify for the national championships. However, they must finish in the top 25 of their region.'
Ball State sophomore Ali Bishel finished second overall at the MAC championships. She has led Ball State at each of the team's meets this season.
Ball State ran at Indiana University once this season already. They competed in a non-scoring event to open their season Sept 8, against Indiana, Michigan and IUPUI.
Bishel finished fifth overall in the meet at Indiana with a time of 18:24. The winner was Erin Webster of Michigan, who won the event with a time of 17:38.
