MEN'S TENNIS: Coach worries about courts for weekend

More than 100 tennis matches involving 17 universities will take place this weekend at the Ball State Invitational providing excitement for the players and migraines for coaches who have to keep track of it all. "It's a logistical nightmare," men's tennis coach Bill Richards said.

Hair salon to move out of Village store

After 15 years of cutting hair in the Village, BoRics Family Haircare Center is closing. Jill Thorpe, a BoRics employee, said the corporate office called the Village store early last week and said the lease would not be renewed. Thorpe said she did not know why the corporation made the decision.

Students who want to learn more about the nation's financial situation can ask a panel of experts at Financial Crisis: Real or Imagined? at 7 p.m. tonight in room 175 in the Art and Journalism Building. Ray Montagno, associate dean of the Miller College of Business and organizer of the panel, said it was important for people to become educated on the issue.

As the Ball State University swimming and diving teams prepare for their first meet of the season against other schools, the freshmen have already made their presence felt. The Cardinals' coaches knew what they were going to get from the upperclassman, but the potential of this year's freshman class could not be missed, diving coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said.

Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., canceled his scheduled speech for Friday at Ball State University's Digital Policy Institute's first conference. Barry Umansky, professor of telecommunications, said Indiana's 6th District representative would be in Washington, D.

FBI reports less violent crimes on BSU campus

Violent crimes at Ball State University decreased from 2006 to 2007, according to the FBI Uniform Crime Report, which released its 2007 findings in September. Five forcible rapes were reported in 2007 compared to 13 in 2006. According to the bureau's statistics, the five forcible rapes was equal to Indiana University-Bloomington, and more than Purdue University.

"The Rat Pack is Back!" was a time warp Wednesday night, back to the swingin' '60s when "The Rat Pack" dominated entertainment on the Vegas strip. The show was a part of Emens Auditorium's 08-09 Artist Series. The group originated when its members collaborated on the set of "Ocean's Eleven.

Nov. 21, 1986. That's the date of the last game that Ball State University women's volleyball program lost to the University of Toledo. The Cardinals have won 41 straight matches against the Rockets since that day when the Rockets conquered 3-0 (15-13, 15-11, 15-11).

WOMEN'S GOLF: Cards take third in Akron

Finishing exactly where it started the day, the Ball State University women's golf team kept its third place spot at the 54-hole Zippy Invitational with a team score of 958. Eastern Michigan won the tournament, shooting 919 as a team, and the University of Akron came in second with a 943.

Minnetrista installs roof with eco-friendly twist

Muncie's Minnetrista Cultural Center is going green. Since Sept. 9 the building has been saving on energy consumption and providing a habitat for birds and insects. "As an institution, one of our goals is to become more green and educating people along the way is also part of our mission," President and CEO Betty Brewer said.

The reputation predator JuicyCampus.com has already raised ire from some at Ball State, including the Student Government Association, which is petitioning to shut down the Web site.

FIELD HOCKEY: Team shows support for fellow BSU athlete

Members of the Ball State University field hockey team were so struck by the injury to senior wide receiver Dante Love that they are honoring him as one of their own. Like many students, the field hockey players watched Ball State's football team defeat Indiana University 42-20 and were startled Love's injury.

Quick degree program not for everyone

With a 3-year-old son, a full-time job and a load of classes life is hectic for Brandi Krintz, a nursing student at Ball State University. Krintz sought a solution with Ball State University's Degree in 3 Program, which allows students to graduate in three years, but in order to do so, she said, she would have to start anew with her college education.
