As the Ball State University swimming and diving teams prepare for their first meet of the season against other schools, the freshmen have already made their presence felt.
The Cardinals' coaches knew what they were going to get from the upperclassman, but the potential of this year's freshman class could not be missed, diving coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said.
"The quality of the freshman as a group is one of best I've had as a coach," she said.
The freshmen contributed in the swimming events at the Cardinals' Red and White meet last week, which was a meet between the members of the team.
Sara Hostetler, a 200 backstroke state champion in high school, picked up where she left off by winning the event in her first attempt at a college competition.
Nicole Saulters and Emily Haifley rounded out the freshmen success with wins in the 100 and 200 backstrokes.
Sophomore Maria Gramelspacher enters this week's events after victories in the 200 and 500 frees.
For the men's team, senior Kyle Hembree defended his role as the top distance swimmer, and Ben Karwoski showed up with wins in the 200 free, 500 free and 200 fly in the Red and White meet.
Tyler Dixon was a two-event winner in the 100 and 200 backstrokes, and Jordan Rantz took the 100 breaststroke.
After the first test of the season, the team heads to Notre Dame this weekend for the Dennis Stark Relays, which is all relay events.
Last year both Ball State teams finished second at the meet.
