His defense held the top-ranked scoring offense in the Mid-American Conference to one touchdown in the first half. His offense gained 376 yards against a Cardinals defense that allowed seven points the previous two games. Yet, No. 18 Ball State, fresh off a bye week, scored four touchdowns in the second half and pulled away to a 38-16 win that improved its record to 8-0.

Delta Zeta sorority raises money in member's memory

Ball State University students and members of the Muncie and Indianapolis community came together Sunday to support Mel's 5k Run and Walk sponsored by the Delta Zeta sorority. The walk and run was held in memory of Delta Zeta sister Melissa Steckler, who died in 2001 from a burn accident, Delta Zeta member Sarah Russell said.

Four first-year players on the Ball State University men's tennis team finished the fall season with some victories at the Marquette Invitational. "It was a pretty successful weekend," coach Bill Richards said. "We got exactly what we wanted in terms of getting experience for our younger players.

2 BSU students shot near Village

Police continued to search Sunday night for suspects in a shooting that hospitalized three people, including two Ball State University students, according to Muncie Police and Ball State officials. Nick Serrano, Chadwic Nash - both Ball State students - and Johnnie Fitzgerald were taken to Ball Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds Friday, Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for marketing and communications, said.

Junior telecommunications major Rich Overfield showed U.S. News Weekly why Ball State University rocks as part of a video contest. "Our school rocks because of immersive learning," Overfield said. "It's the cornerstone of our education. It defines us as a university and will make us better in the real world.

SOCCER: Unprepared Cards lose

With a pair of losses this weekend, the Ball State University soccer team's tournament hopes are still alive but in doubt. The Cardinals (8-9-1, 4-5-1 Mid-American Conference) lost to Western Michigan University (6-10-1, 5-4-1 MAC) Friday and Northern Illinois University (9-4-5, 5-3-2 MAC) Sunday, with 1-0 scores in both games.

Police respond to shots fired call south of Village

Police responded to a shots fired call late Friday at a house south of the Village. Police vehicles from Ball State University, Muncie, Delaware County Sheriff's and Indiana State Police departments responded to the call at 202 Dill St. Muncie Police investigators, who are heading the investigation, would not comment on the incident late Friday because they were still investigating the scene.

FIELD HOCKEY: Winning ways short-lived for Ball State

Back on the road for the first time in four weeks, the Ball State University field hockey team dropped a pair of games to Ohio University and Kent State University. The Cardinals dropped to 2-14 on the season after losing to the Bobcats 5-1 and the Golden Flashes 3-1.

FOOTBALL: Cards No. 16 in newest BCS standings

A 22-point win Saturday was good enough for the Ball State University football team to move up two spots in the newest poll. The Associated Press ranked the Cardinals (8-0, 4-0 Mid-American Conference) at No. 18 in its weekly poll released Sunday. Ball State received 542 votes - 185 more votes than last week - following its 38-16 win against Eastern Michigan University at Scheumann Stadium.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State upsets MAC leader

The Ball State University women's volleyball team upset the 2007 Mid-American Conference Tournament Champion and current East Division leader Miami University Saturday night at Miami's Millett Hall. The Cardinals won 26-24, 25-17, 17-15, 11-25, 18-16. "I think we are just beginning to show how good we're going to be," coach Dave Boos said.

The Ball State University women's volleyball team had host Bowling Green State University down to match point twice in Friday night's Mid-American Conference showdown. Both times, however, the Falcons prevailed and the Cardinals lost 16-25, 25-20, 25-14, 20-25, 17-15.

Muncie's poverty rate is skewed

The poverty rate in Muncie and other college towns in Indiana might be misrepresented, according to a recent study conducted by Ball State University's Bureau of Business Research. Muncie's poverty rate in 2005 was 24.2 percent, but after a change in Census reporting in 2006 this statistic increased to 31.

Ventriloquist to bring friends for Emens show

Ventriloquist and stand-up comedian Jeff Dunham is coming to John R. Emens Auditorium on Saturday. There are two shows, one starting at 7 p.m. and another at 10 p.m. Dunham has released two DVDs, "Arguing with Myself" and "Spark of Insanity," and another, "A Very Special Christmas Special," planned to be released Nov.
