State universities will use network to connect faster

A new fiber-optic network will allow Ball State University students and faculty to send large files and access materials more than 600 percent faster than before. Ball State will join Indiana University and Purdue University on a network called I-Light in the next few months.

Monetary gifts play major role in naming buildings on campus

From Ball Gym to the recently named Scheumann Stadium, many of Ball State University's buildings carry the names of key contributors to the university. As with many colleges across the country, the building-naming process remains a vital part of Ball State because it connects students with the university's history and provides a tradition for the campus.

A high-ranking Israeli official discussed the continuing conflicts between Israel and Palestine with more than 50 students, faculty members and Muncie residents Wednesday afternoon. Barukh Binah, consul general to the Midwest, also talked about last week's Israeli elections.

Halfway though spring practice, Ball State University football coach Brady Hoke likes what he sees so far. "Offensively and defensively, our tempo is better," Hoke said. "Our overall performance, when you compare springs, is lightyears ahead of where we were three years ago.

The Cardinal football team played its first game under permanent lights in 2004, attracting a record number of spectators. But for the next two years, fans complained that the cost of the lights wasn't worth it because the university only scheduled one night game per season.

Associate professor Nihal Perera to research city planning

A Ball State University professor will be one of 800 American college faculty members to teach and research in other countries during the next academic year. Nihal Perera, associate professor of urban planning and director of the Asian studies program, will spend 10 months in Hong Kong as a Fulbright Scholar.

Ball State University President Jo Ann Gora and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins made it clear they were hoping to make a big splash when hiring the next men's basketball coach. They scored perfect 10s across the board. There was plenty of star power at the press conference Tuesday when Ball State officially announced that Ronny Thompson would be the next head coach.

Commission wants to bring BSU students downtown

Drawing Ball State University students and parents downtown during Summer 2006 Orientation and keeping students coming back during the academic year is a chief goal for the Mayor's Commission for Ball State Student Relations. Ken Hughes and Cheryl Crowder of Muncie Downtown Development suggested engaging parents during summer orientation by dropping them off at a strategic point on Walnut Street and allowing them to explore the downtown area through a scavenger hunt or special visits for one and a half hours.

FOOTBALL: Ball State opens season with MAC game

The Ball State University football team announced its 2006 schedule, which begins with four of five games at home, a televised late-season game at the University of Toledo and a game with University of Michigan. The first four home games are in the evening.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Cards head to Kentucky for spring invitational

The Ball State University women's golf team will begin play today at the Eastern Kentucky University Spring Invitational at the Arlington Golf Course in Richmond, Ky. The event will take place through Saturday and feature 18 holes on each day. Fourteen teams will compete in this year's EKU Spring Invitational, including last year's team champion Murray State University.

I would like to thank the Zeigler Advisory Committee for Jewish Studies for bringing Barukh Binah, Consul General of Israel to the Midwest, to Ball State University. He is a thoughtful, well-informed and articulate speaker. This discussion was particularly timely, given last week's parliamentary elections in Israel.

Americans need to face the reality that "we are not equal," a Ball State University student said Wednesday night at an event for Asian Awareness Week. Junior Gennie Nguyen said Americans liked to think they were equal rather than dealing with equality issues.

Blood donor regulations under debate

Filling out questionnaires at the university blood drive today and Friday, students will check yes or no on the infamous "are you a man who has had sex with a man" question. However, that question, and ones like it, could be missing from future questionnaires.

Students promote cultural awareness

More than 100 students stopped to hear members of Ball State University's multicultural organizations promote cultural awareness Wednesday at the Scramble Light. The rally was the second since several students contested how university police treated a predominately black group of students during a game of midnight tag on LaFollette Field on March 30.
