WOMEN'S GOLF: Cards head to Kentucky for spring invitational

Team hopes to use familiarity with course to focus on specifics

The Ball State University women's golf team will begin play today at the Eastern Kentucky University Spring Invitational at the Arlington Golf Course in Richmond, Ky. The event will take place through Saturday and feature 18 holes on each day. Fourteen teams will compete in this year's EKU Spring Invitational, including last year's team champion Murray State University.

Despite having the defending champion at the tournament, coach Katherine Mowat believes the biggest competition for the Cardinals will be the conference rival Toledo.

"They will be the team we target and try to beat," Mowat said.

The Cardinals are coming off a seventh-place finish at last week's UNC-Wilmington Lady Seahawk Invitational. The Cardinals were led by senior Julie Harder, who finished tied for eighth in the tournament.

The Cardinals have been built on veteran leadership and great play from Harder, senior Katie Sundberg and junior Kallie Harrison. However, the Cardinals will have to play without Harrison, who will not be playing in the tournament as she prepares for her MCAT. She will be replaced on the roster by junior Chelsie Flannery. Flannery has not been in a competition with the Cardinals since last spring.

The Cardinals are still confident despite the absence of Harrison, as this is a course they are familiar with. Some team members have played it multiple times. The familiarity with the course has allowed the Cardinals to focus on specific aspects of the course.

"It's interesting to go through the results from the past and see how we scored." Mowat said. "We've been able to prepare and focus on the specifics."
