THE DORK REPORT: United States needs better rail system

President George W. Bush only had it half right when he said at this year's State of the Union address that America is addicted to oil. A newscaster reporting on the address later told the rest of the story: We're addicted to cars. Not only do we suffer from car addiction, we also have a taste for gas-guzzling SUVs, Hummers and semitrailers.



MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ronny Thompson show to debut Tuesday

Ball State University's men's basketball coach, Ronny Thompson, will make his television debut on "The Ronny Thompson Show" at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The program will air on the Ball State Sports Network and on WIPB-TV in Muncie. The show will have a repeat broadcast at 11 p.


Housing clusters added for fall

Some students living in Ball State University residence halls will have more than their addresses in common Fall Semester. Incoming students will be clustered together in residence halls based on majors with the intent to improve the learning environment. Students majoring in communications fields at Ball State have been clustered together for the past five years, and Johnson Complex has operated in a similar arrangement with Honors College students for more than 20 years.


QUESTIONABLE CONUNDRUMS: Unlicensed drivers deserve harsh penalty

Some people live by the saying "the punishment should fit the crime." I don't agree with these people on all crimes, but it is true that some punishments could be changed for the better. For a simple example, think about the punishment for driving uninsured or without a valid drivers license.



TRACK: Seniors race at nationals

Two Ball State University seniors closed out their track careers on a national stage this weekend.-á Jill Scully and Jennifer McCoy represented the Cardinals at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Sacramento, Calif.-á McCoy completed her career at Ball State with a 27th place finish in the heptathlon on Saturday with a score of 4,167.


Telecommunication students take gold statue at Student Academy Awards with 'Perspective'

Two Ball State University students took home a gold Student Academy Award Saturday, marking the second consecutive year telecommunications students received this honor. Travis Hatfield and Samuel Day were awarded the top honor in alternative student-produced films from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for their film "Perspective" during a ceremony in Los Angeles.


SPEAK SOFTLY: U.S. residents should consider every side of Haditha argument

A group of 12 United States Marines are being held at Camp Pendleton in California on charges that they murdered 24 innocent Iraqis in the town of Haditha, which is located about 150 miles northwest of Baghdad. This incident was suspected to have taken place approximately eight months ago and has come to be a battle cry for the Iraqis and war protesters here in America.

An average person uses media for more hours a day than he sleeps, according to data collected by the Middletown Media Studies efforts. As a branch of the Center for Media Design, the Middletown Media Studies project continues to release reports analyzing information collected on people's real-time media use.



Help Not Wanted

Like many Ball State University students, Tim Pierz thought he might never find a summer job. The senior had been searching during the more than four weeks since the academic school year ended. He had an apartment to pay for and hadn't found work, despite having applied to more than 10 businesses.


DIET WATER: Deadline foils armageddon warning

The deadline for this column was Tuesday night. And if by any small chance this makes it to press on Thursday, you can count yourself among the few who survived. Although the Ball State University baseball team failed to survive the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in the Lexington, Ky. regional this past weekend, three Cardinal players were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Sophomore pitcher Ben Snyder, senior center fielder Mike Sullivan, and senior third baseman C.



BASEBALL: Injuries slow down former Cards star

Bryan Bullington could be the best talent to ever emerge from a Ball State University athletic program.-á As the number one overall pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2002 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Bullington inherited higher expectations than most, following the footsteps of former number one overall picks such as Ken Griffey Jr.

Four players on the Ball State University baseball team will take the next step towards the big leagues. Pitcher Ben Snyder, first baseman Brad Miller and center fielder Mike Sullivan were drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, which took place on Tuesday and Wednesday.


The Final Frontier

Scottsdale, a town of 6,000 in southern Indiana, faced a problem in 2002. The local car dealership, O'Neal Chrysler, threatened to move out because it was having difficulty accessing service manuals online. With only dial-up Internet service available in the small town, businesses were struggling.

Storm Chase Team adviser to leave BSU

After eight years, a Ball State University professor responsible for developing the meteorology program and expanding labs available to students will head to another university in the fall. David Arnold, associate professor of geography, will move to Frostburg State University, a public university in Maryland with a total enrollment of just more than 5,000 students.


BASEBALL: Cardinals eliminated from NCAA Regionals

LEXINGTON, Ky. - With the University of Kentucky leading 11-5 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, the plan was to record the final six outs quickly and put Ball State University on its bus. That's not the way the Cardinals saw it playing out, however.
