Luke Messer to speak at College Republicans meeting

09/17/12 8:45 p.m.

The Republican U.S. Congressional candidate for the Indiana's 6th district will be on campus this evening, updating students on his campaign as part of the College Republicans meeting.

Luke Messer will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Art and Journalism Building Room 289.

Messer, who lives in Shelbyville, Ind., served as representative to the Indiana General Assembly for 57th district. From 2001 to 2005, Messer was the executive director and chief spokesman of the Indiana Republican Party.

President of Ball State College Republicans Kayleigh Mohler believes that, even though college students are sometimes overlooked, Messer tries to reach out to young voters.

"As college students, there is a lot riding on this election for us," she said." "So I hope that they come and listen to what he has to say and actually think about it and become more informed before Nov. 6."

In November, Messer will face Democrat Brad Bookout. College Republicans and University Democrats will host a debate between the two candidates on Oct. 2.

"He's been great with helping us out and helping us get involved," Mohler said. "Now that he is the official candidate, we thought it was only fitting to bring him on campus as soon as possible."

Closer to the election, College Republicans will work a phone bank for Messer and contacting voters about his campaign.

"Messer does a really good job about focusing on what matters here in the 6th district," Kelsea Neal, College Republicans public relations chair, said. "And he's really honed in on who lives here and what they need out of their representatives in Washington."
