Excise police say fewer minors being sold alcohol

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana businesses are doing a better job of keeping alcohol out of the hands of underage Hoosiers.

State Excise Police officers conducted more than 5,000 inspections from Jan. 1 through June 30. People ages 18 to 20 accompany officers and try to buy alcoholic beverages. Authorities say businesses failed about 6.5 of the tests.

Bars and restaurants had a non-compliance rate of 8.8 percent, while grocery stores and package liquor stores failed 5 percent of inspections. Drug stores failed inspections less than 1 percent of the time. All of those stores had lower non-compliance rates this year than in 2010 or 2009.

Hotels and farm wineries failed inspections more than 25 percent of the time.

Authorities say the inspection program leads to fewer minors being sold alcoholic beverages.
