New Castle building's roof collapses under ice

NEW CASTLE, Ind. — Authorities have closed a street in New Castle after a downtown building's roof collapsed beneath the weight of ice and snow.

New Castle Fire Chief Jeff Murray told WISH-TV firefighters were called at about 10 a.m. Monday by workers who arrived and found cracks in the building, along with pieces of ceiling and drywall on the floor.

Firefighters found the roof collapsed. No injuries were reported. The building was unoccupied at the time.

Authorities closed Broad Street between 14th and 15th Streets as a precaution.

The National Weather Service said New Castle received almost two inches of precipitation in a winter storm early last week, and about 2.5 inches of snow Saturday.
