LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Planned Parenthood under attack by proposed bill

Planned Parenthood of Indiana is under attack by the right-wing. There have been 17 bills filed (by 23 men and 2 women) that take away a woman's right to choose. One in particular makes abortions illegal unless a woman's life is in danger, which is unconstitutional at best.

Bill 1205 would eliminate all federal funding to Planned Parenthood, even Medicaid reimbursements for their 9,300 Medicaid patients. Not a cent of the funding goes to abortions; the money, instead, goes to screenings, birth control, pap smears, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections.

The eight health centers that are in the most jeopardy are in the northwestern and rural southern Indiana: Gary, East Chicago, Michigan City, Elkhart, Bedford, Seymour, Scottsburg and New Albany. All of this adds costs at a time when the state has no money and is making cuts in education and unemployment benefits while unemployment remains at an all-time sustained high here in Indiana.

If any of these bills pass, the independence of Hoosier women will be diminished. The clear suggestion here is that women are incapable of making well-informed decisions for ourselves and our families without mandated lectures (commonly referred to as "informed consent") written by white men in suits.
