Spectrum to stay silent today

The men and women of Spectrum will refrain from speech today as they participate in the annual Day of Silence for GLBT rights.

Kyle Stepler, secretary for Spectrum, Ball State University's GLBT ally organization, said the Day of Silence is a day for anyone who identifies with the gay community or is an ally of the gay community.

"Those participating do not talk the whole day and silence themselves to prove that, as a minority, the community does have a voice," said Stepler.

The movement is meant to raise awareness that the GLBT community is no different than anyone else. Many are taking this vow to show their support for anyone who has ever been bullied or harassed because of their sexual identity, he said.

According to dayofsilence.org, Day of Silence is a nationwide event that brings thousands of students together as they take a vow of silence to bring attention to anti-GLBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in their schools.

Founded in 1996, the Day of Silence has become the largest single student-led action towards creating a safer school environment, regardless of one's sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, according the Web site.
