Inaugural race raises $6,000 for MS

The first Jeff Clevenger 5K Run and Walk raised about $6,000 for multiple sclerosis Saturday.

More than 260 runners and walkers dominated the streets through Ball State University and the neighborhood west of campus.

Daniel Clevenger, president of the Exercise Science Club that organized the event, said the turnout far exceeded everyone's expectations.

"When we were shooting for the stars we were hoping for 150 (people to register for the event)," he said. "We never thought that many people would come."

It's hard to set a goal for something when the club hadn't ever put together an event like that, he said. But the 40 or 50 volunteers were able to put on the race with no problems and raise about $6,000 after expenses.

He would've considered the run and walk a success if 50 to 100 people showed up, he said, because it was the first one. But the race, named for Clevenger's father who recently died of multiple sclerosis, received a lot support from local businesses and the club advertised it.

Though he's graduating and won't be around to have a hands-on role in the event planning, Clevenger said he thinks the Exercise Science Club's younger members will be able to make it an annual event.

"I think it'll be a pretty easy thing to carry on," he said.
