Garfield creator returns to Ball State for fundraiser

"An Extraordinary Evening with Jim Davis" proceeds will go to new immersive learning fund

Even though some of the buildings may be new, some of the technology revamped and some additions created on Ball State University's campus throughout the years, Jim Davis, distinguished alumnus and creator of the comic cat Garfield, still feels welcome.

"I look at the students and I swear they're the very same kids I walked to class with in 1965," Davis said. "Everyone's relaxed, smiling… I love the Midwest, I love how easygoing and friendly people are; that hasn't changed a bit."

Davis will be continuing his involvement with his alma mater during "An Extraordinary Evening with Jim Davis" event tomorrow, in which all the proceeds will go towards the Jim Davis Fund, an endowment that will provide students with immersive learning experiences. Although all the details are not worked out yet, Davis said he is excited to contribute more to the college community, and hopes to encourage more students to remain in the area.

"Ball State University is an incubator for tomorrow's leaders, tomorrow's entrepreneurs, and it's in our interest in the community to retain just as many of the gifted kids from Ball State University as possible," he said. "It's an effort to keep the talent right here as they graduate from the university, so I'm being selfish."

At the event, Davis will discuss his career, the immersive learning project and the upcoming Garfield musical, all while sketching in front of the audience.

"I'll draw as much as I can because when I draw I don't have to talk," he said, laughing. "I think people are more interested in watching me draw anyway."

Despite this appearance, this is not Davis' first time back to the university. He frequently visits campus and even attends John R. Emens Auditorium shows with his grandchildren.

Davis said he wishes he were able to attend Ball State now to take advantage of all the new programs available, but is hopeful for future students.

"In the years to come, it will be interesting to see between Garfield and Ball State University in turn how we mature and what we do with our relationship down the road to perpetuate both organizations. This is just one step along the way to working more closely together; I'm really looking forward to it."
