MEN'S GOLF: Nine BSU golfers to compete for amateur title

Nine members of the Ball State University men's golf team, led by 2006-07 seniors C.D. Hockersmith, Wayne Denger, Kyle Cox and Andy Skillman, will open play Monday at the 106th Indiana State Amateur Championship.

Joining Cox, Denger, Hockersmith and Skillman at the 2006 Indiana Amateur will be sophomores Chris Hanson, Brian Maurer and Matt Schumaker along with freshmen Ross Cosat and Travis Smith.

Broadmoor Country Club in Indianapolis will host the 106th Indiana State Amateur Championship beginning Monday, June 26 at 8 a.m, through Thursday, June 29th.

Qualifying for the championship was held June 2-5. There were 25 players exempt for the championship, including Hockersmith by virtue of his top-20 finish in 2005, plus all past champions who still meet the eligibility requirements.

The final field of 156 players will be cut to the low 60 following the second round.

Notable past champions of the event include PGA Tour players Fuzzy Zoeller (1973) and Jim Gallagher, Jr. (1982, 1983)
