Village seeks donors today

Businesses hoping to increase traffic during campus-wide event

Windermere Place Apartments and Ball Memorial Blood Bank combined with 18 businesses to hold the Village Blood Drive today.

The Windermere Place office at 1622 West University Ave. will keep its doors open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. A raffle takes place every hour and is open to anyone, Logan Hindsley, spokesman for Windermere Place, said.

"You don't have to donate blood to come in the office," Hindsley said. "The raffle is open to anyone."

Hindsley said the donor goal is 50 to 75 pints of blood. Donors receive a t-shirt, coupons and a rose from Landmark Florists. Hindsley said eight Village businesses donated gift certificates worth $5 to $50 for the raffle.

Joe Whalen, owner of Landmark Florists, said the blood drive's benefits go full circle in the community.

"We always try to support the community we live in," Whalen said. "The community supports you -- it's a great way to give back and take care of people."

Karen Fisher, owner of Art Mart, said she hopes the event will increase traffic in the Village.

"We're trying to get traffic from the university and the community to come into the Village," Fisher said. "The more people we can get to walk in the door, the more likely we're able to make a sale."

Hindsley said information about Windermere's upcoming apartment complex behind Bethel Avenue's Best Buy is available for anyone who's interested during the drive.

He said he also expects the drive to exceed its goal.

"We want to help people who need blood. We hope a lot of students go down there to donate," Hindsley said.
