MEN'S TRACK Team tunes up for MAC at Hoosier Hills Invite

Returning to Bloomington for the second time this season, the Ball State men's track and field team made its final stride before the Mid-American Conference Championships, set to take place this Friday and Saturday.

The Cardinals had several strong performances at the Hoosier Hills Invitational last Friday, including Paul Panning's second first-place finish of the season at Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse.

Panning's mark of 17-00 34 was nearly 20 inches above the nearest collegiate competitor.

Freshman Stephen Cohen placed second in the 3000-meter run but was first among collegiate competitors. His season-best time of 8:50.73 was nearly 19 seconds behind unattached runner Chris Ekman.

"(Stephen's) been pretty consistent all year," coach Jermaine Jones said. "We're just trying to set him up for next week."

Cohen's classmate Corey Miller took second in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.22, the team's best mark of the season in that event.

In the 200, the team also set a season-best time as sophomore Jon Krysa won the event with a time of 22.67.

Junior high jumper Ben Daniel took second with a team season-best leap of 6-9, also behind an unattached participant.

Senior Sal Impelletteri's time of 4:28.44 in the mile got him third place while junior Kyle Cleaver finished 11th in the weight throw, recording a season-best mark of 50-01 34.

"Once (Kyle) gets a little bit more confidence, he'll be able to throw big. He just needs to focus on what we're trying to do," Jones said. "This is only his second meet so next week should be really interesting."

The Cards' next meet is the MAC Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday, hosted by Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti, Mich.
