Committee to search for next AD

Don Park put in charge of eight-member search committee for director.

With Andi Seger retiring as athletics director on June 30, Don Park, vice president of University Advancement has been put in charge of the search for a new director.

To aid Park in his quest to find a new athletics leader, a search committee has been put together to weed through the applications.

The eight-member committee is made up of Jon Reno, NCAA faculty representative, David Land, director of athletics compliance, Jim Ruebel, dean of the Honors College, Laura Siebold-Caudill, women's swimming and diving head coach, Tim Buckley, men's basketball head coach, Ken Briner, president of Cardinal Varsity Club, and student athletes Ehren Reagor and Donta Smith.

Park said the position has been posted on the NCAA Web site, on many Ball State Web sites and will be published in the Chronicle for Higher Education. He said the applications will "basically be accepted until we complete the search."

The board will meet next week to discuss the criteria for which the committee seeks in a new director and set dates to review applications.

Park said the first review of applications should cut the field of choices down to 10 or fewer.

Once the committee has dwindled the stack of applications down to the best 10, Park said Merritt Norvell, a representative from international search firm DNR, will aid the search by conducting one-on-one interviews with the remaining candidates.

Norvell of Lansing, Mich., has a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin and is a former athletics director of Michigan State University. Park said DNR is based out of nearly 20 cities worldwide and conducts thousands of major corporate searches a year.

"We just wanted to make sure that we have objective data," Park said. "(Norvell) will sit with the committee and discuss who are the best three to bring to campus."

The final three candidates will have interviews with the committee.

Through it all, much like was emphasized at Seger's announcement on Feb. 20 by President Blaine Brownell, Park and the committee are committed to finding the best qualified person for the job.

"I Have no preference if it's an inside or outside (applicant) as long as they continue the success of the program," Park said. "It's a good opportunity for someone because we have a program that is in good shape.

"When we are all done I want the committee to be able to say they did a very thorough search for the best person for this job at this time."
