More than an inch and a half of rain since midnight triggered minor flooding and other high-water aggravation across campus today.

The G15 faculty and staff yellow parking lot next to Lucina Hall started to flood early this morning, according to an email sent out by the University Police Department.

Kevin Kenyon, associate vice president of facilities, said the email was sent out as a preventative measure.

"[The flooding in lot G15] is an issue with inadequate drainage, and it’s beyond our control,” Kenyon said. “I’ve been here 15 years — any time it rains like this, that lot floods.”

The flooding across campus will make travel difficult in some areas, like Bethel Avenue, said Kenyon.

People should avoid navigating high water. Kenyon said buildings, like the Administration Building, with ramps leading down will experience instances of flooding because of poor drainage.

“We’re not in a floodplain, so we’re not in any danger of the White River flooding campus,” Kenyon said. “The only thing we’re in danger of is a little bit of flooding from poor drainage.”

Emergency dispatch said most of the issues people are running into are from motorists who are trying to drive through high water and having their cars stall out.

Some power outages were reported on the southside of Muncie, but spokesman Tracy Warner for Indiana Michigan Power said those issues were fixed by 12:35 p.m.

"We had 270 customers without power," Warner said. "When we're notified of a power outage, we investigate the issues and safely repair it."
