FOOTBALL: Students asked to red out game, fireworks planned after game

The Ball State University's opening football game Thursday against the University of North Texas is guaranteed to end with a bang. After the game, there will be a fireworks show. Prior to the game, the Ball State athletics department will be giving away free football posters and will recognize the women's volleyball team at halftime.

Satellite voting centers proposed for next year

Voters registered in Delaware County may find it a bit easier to vote in the next election. Delaware County Clerk Steve Craycraft, a Democrat, proposed establishing two satellite voting sites for the 2010 election at last week's meeting of the Delaware County Board of Elections.

CROSS COUNTRY: Cards host first meet in 13 years, sweep Greyhounds

In Ball State's first home cross country meet in 13 years, the Cardinals swept visiting Indianapolis 15-50 in Monday's dual meet at the Elks Country Club. With fans and friends cheering them to the finish line, the Cardinals used the energy of the crowd to take the top eight spots and the meet from the Greyhounds.

Inflation rates affect students, university budget

The minimum wage increase and national inflation rates have affected "little pockets" in students' budgets, as well as Ball State University's budget, one school official said. Some areas that have been affected recently at Ball State include student employment, cost of food in the dining halls and the cost of washing laundry on campus.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Libero expected to miss 3-4 weeks

The coaching staff and team doctors are being cautiously optimistic on the condition of starting libero Alyssa Rio. Rio, who was injured Friday night in the season opener against number 19 Purdue. Rio was injured when she planted to field a ball and her leg came out from underneath her.

SOCCER: Cardinals drop pair of matches in Florida

The Ball State University soccer team returns to campus after a weekend trip to Florida with two losses. The Cardinals opened their regular season last Friday against Miami in Coral Gables, Fla., and were defeated 5-1. Sunday, the team traveled to Boca Raton in a match against Florida Atlantic University and was defeated 3-0.

FIELD HOCKEY: Cards match 2008 win total after first weekend

Within one weekend, the Ball State University field hockey team found a way to match its season win total from the 2008 season by racking up back-to-back wins. Ball State began its weekend by defeating Davidson College 2-1 on Saturday in North Carolina. This is the second straight year that Ball State has defeated Davidson, a win that last season counted for one of Ball State's two wins.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards drop all three matches, two players are injured

Chaos, confusion and worst case scenario. Not exactly the words any coach wants to use in the same sentence, but that's what coach Dave Boos and the Ball State University women's volleyball team lived over the weekend. Having travelled to West Lafayette to appear in the Premier Mortar Board Tournament, expectations were high for the Cardinals.

CROSS COUNTRY: Cardinals' sweep first home meet in 13 years

The Ball State University cross country team got off to a fast start in their first meet of the season beating the visiting University of Indianapolis 15-50 at the Elks Country Club in Muncie. Ball State was led by the 2007 Mid-American Conference Championship runner-up Ali Bischel, who finished in first place overall in the meet.

An Island deserted

Muncie's only island was quiet on Sunday. Despite the planned art show that afternoon, there were only two people calmly enjoying smoothies at The Island Muncie. Owner Roger Conatser said this was how most of the art shows at the Island have turned out. "The artists are few and far between, really," Conatser said.

Inside the Cardinal football complex, today is football Wednesday. With the season opener against the University of North Texas on Thursday night, Ball State has to reorder their schedules which are normally designed with a Saturday game day in mind. "The older guys know that," coach Stan Parrish said.

One game into its season, the Ball State University field hockey team is already one win away from matching last season's win total. After finishing the 2008 season 2-17, Ball State defeated Davidson College 2-1 in its season opener on Saturday in North Carolina.

Students with AT&T service to their smart phones can now navigate the Internet and download files at greater speeds, thanks to an expansion of the company's 3G network in the Delaware County area. The new network is an upgrade in speed and efficiency, Steve Jones, director of the Center for Information and Communication Sciences, said.

Gov. Daniels may be a good candidate for the 2012 election

BAINBRIDGE, Ind. (AP) - Republican Mitch Daniels has repeatedly insisted that his 2008 run for a second term as Indiana's governor was his last election and that he's not interested in the "savagery" of a national campaign. But like it or not, Daniels' name is being dropped in conservative GOP circles as someone to watch in 2012.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Libero Rio pulls hamstring, hopes to be back within one month

Ball State University libero Alyssa Rio pulled her left hamstring in the Cardinals' 3-0 Friday night loss to No. 19 Purdue University, the junior told The Ball State Daily News on Saturday night. Rio said she hopes to return to the lineup within a month. She is still awaiting to be evaluated by team doctors on campus to begin treatment.

Price is Right lights up Emens' stage

One of the most well known shows in game show history was reenacted yet again at Emens Auditorium on Saturday. There were various prizes given away throughout the night ranging from a floor lamp to an Xbox 360. Some participants walked away with nothing but an LED Candle, while others walked away with futons.
