Ball State vs University of Kentucky Football Preview

The 2023 college football season is barely more than a week away, with the action kicking off in earnest on Saturday, August 26. Football fans in Kentucky will have to wait a little bit longer, though: after a game between the Louisville Cardinals and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on September 1, the Bluegrass state is diving head first into the season with a game between the Ball State Cardinals and the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington the following day.

Associated Press: Sweltering temperatures bring misery to large portion of central US, setting heat records

The National Weather Service set an excessive heat warning Sunday for parts of Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska. Heat advisories or watches were also in place in parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota and South Dakota.

Don McLean to open Brown Family Amphitheater with Sept. 2 performance

After having conversations with several community leaders and finding out that Don McLean had an opening on his tour, the mayor of Muncie wanted to bring the “American Pie” singer and songwriter to the city. When he found out that the originally planned venue for the concert, Canan Commons, was already booked with events, he believed that the concert was not going to happen.

Indiana Supreme Court won’t rehear near-total abortion ban ruling, putting law back in effect

The Indiana Supreme Court on Monday denied a request to rehear its ruling upholding the state’s near-total abortion ban.  That means the new law — which prohibits the procedure with only narrow exceptions — immediately takes effect once the ruling is certified on the court docket, which is expected to be a matter of days, according to court officials.

No. 3 Notre Dame beats the Cardinals

The Cardinals find their way home after a 3-0 loss against NCAA’s third-ranked team, Notre Dame. Senior defender Eva Gaetino scored in the 21 minute, assisted by Sophomore midfielder Leah Klenke. Freshman forward Meg Mrowicki found the back of the net in the 38-minute, with an assist from graduate forward Audrey Weiss and graduate midfielder Erin Hohnstein in the 38-minute.

Delta defeats Muncie Central in first game of the season

In their first game of the 2023 season, the Delta Eagles received the opening kickoff and started to gain momentum. But then, first-year starting quarterback, junior Bronson Edwards, fired an interception near the endzone, which was returned to midfield. “I think it was mainly my mindset because, after that first pick, it kind of looked like everything was just going downhill,” Edwards said.

Yorktown defeats Brebeuf 3-1 in home opener

Yorktown went into last night’s home opener against Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory having only played one other game (a 3-0 win against Westfield) this season. But the Braves had already played four games and had only lost one set in that stretch. Yet the visiting Braves have now lost four sets as the Tigers came out victorious as they defeated their opponent 3-1, giving Yorktown its second straight win.

Ball State takes the win during their home opener against Mercyhurst

Senior midfielder, Avery Fenchel, took on the first three goals as she stepped out on the field after recovering from last season's ankle injury. “Everyone contributed today,” Fenchel said. Sophomore midfielder, Tori Monaco, assisted two of Fenchel’s goals. Monaco listens to rap artists, Jay Cole and Trippy Red continuously the hour prior to the game to help set her focus and mindset while doing some visualization.

Lending a helping hand

For the past 14 years, Hearts and Hands United has hosted the Tools for School drive. Each year thousands of families are helped throughout the event. Tools for School gives out school necessities such as shoes, backpacks, school supplies and jeans. Hearts and Hands United also partnered with Safari Dental to give out free teeth cleanings and dental screenings, as well as partnering with Open Door for free immunizations and $25 sports physicals.

Associated Press: Survivors of Maui fires face power cuts and poor cell service as teams work to find and ID the dead

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Survivors of deadly wildfires on Maui contended with intermittent power and unreliable cell service as they sought help rebuilding their lives. Teams of people, meanwhile, labored to find the dead and identify them. With the death toll already at 106, a mobile morgue unit with additional coroners arrived in Hawaii on Tuesday to help with the grim task of sorting through remains. The governor warned that a new storm could complicate the search and recovery.

Ball State PBS documentary features Anderson, Ind.

It will be the next installment in the series highlighting great small towns in East Central Indiana. “Now Entering…Anderson” premieres live at 8 p.m. on Ball State PBS, it can also be seen online at ballstatepbs.org and on the PBS app or the Ball State Public Media app. “We are proud to highlight the civic pride and tell the wonderful regional stories of exciting things happening in cities and small towns all over our viewing area,” Dr. Phil Hoffman, assistant dean of media and general manager of Ball State Public Media said.
