David Letterman drives into retirement with Indy 500 tribute

INDIANAPOLIS — David Letterman has a new No. 1 on his personal Top Ten list of reasons he loves the Indianapolis 500. The freshly retired Letterman was all grins early Sunday as his IndyCar team paid tribute to the former "Late Show" host by putting a gap-toothed, smiling caricature of his face and #thanksdave on driver Oriol Servia's yellow car for the big race. "With everything that's happened, it's the highlight of my career," Letterman said.

To-go margaritas come with several guidelines

Margaritas to-go sound great, but could they really be sold in the Village?  Co-owners of Cleo's Bourbon Bar, Ryan Clements and Chris Ellison, are planning to merge with Sir Nachos owner Emanuel Escamilla and open Three Amigos next month. The three entrepreneurs hope to sell mobile versions of their staple drink in sealed Ball jars.  Brandon Thomas, Indiana excise police public information officer, said many establishments sell carry out margaritas.

California oil sop-up starts, thousands of gallons gathered

GOLETA, Calif. (AP) — More than 6,000 gallons of oil had been raked, skimmed and vacuumed from a spill that stretched across 9 miles of California coast in a cleanup effort that is now going 24 hours a day, officials said, but that's some of the sticky, stinking goo that escaped from a broken pipeline. Investigators took stock of the scope of the spill on Wednesday a day after the pipeline break, finding that up to 105,000 gallons may have leaked out, and up to a fifth of that amount — 21,000 gallons — reached the sea, according to estimates. Federal regulators were investigating the leak as workers in protective suits raked and shoveled the black sludge off the beaches, and boats towed booms into place to corral the two slicks off the Santa Barbara coast. The chief executive of the company that runs the pipeline, Plains All American Pipeline LP, was at the site of the spill Wednesday and apologized for it. "We deeply, deeply regret that this incident has occured at all," Chairman and CEO Greg L.

Feds propose multi-pronged plan to bolster decline in bees

WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal government hopes to reverse America's declining honeybee and monarch butterfly populations by making more federal land bee-friendly, spending more money on research and considering the use of less pesticides. Scientists say bees — crucial to pollinate many crops — have been hurt by a combination of declining nutrition, mites, disease, and pesticides.

Ball State's former prison program helped 'rehabilitate people,' professor says

The first time Daniel Messel, the man accused of murdering an Indiana University student, was in prison, he received a Ball State degree through the university’s former prison program. Although Messel may be headed back to prison, research shows that receiving an education while in prison reduces the likelihood of an individual returning to lock up. Messel received an associate’s degree in general arts from Ball State while serving an eight-year sentence after pleading guilty to a charge of battery with a deadly weapon. Ball State used to offer instruction to prisoners at the Pendleton Correctional Facility, near Muncie.
