Whitlock says U.S. needs journalists to uphold democracy

Critical journalism is crucial to upholding the United States' ideals, Jason Whitlock, a columnist and sportswriter for The Kansas City Star and FoxSports.com, said. "If there's nobody challenging the power structure, we don't have a democracy," he said. Whitlock, who graduated from Ball State University in 1990, spoke about his personal experiences as a journalist to an audience of about 175 on Wednesday night as part of the Letterman Speaker Series.

2 BSU students hit by car Thursday outside LaFollette Complex

Two Ball State University students were at Ball Memorial Hospital at 8:45 p.m. Thursday after they were struck by an SUV outside LaFollette Complex earlier that evening, freshman Ellie Howard said. Howard said she and Caty Lykins, also a freshman, were walking back to their rooms in LaFollette after having dinner at Noyer Complex when a red Jeep Grand Cherokee hit them.

Immersive learning expands to area schools

Elementary and early elementary education majors now have the opportunity to be involved with Schools Within the Context of Community, a new practicum highlighting immersive learning offered at Ball State University. The program is offering students the chance to work in a day-to-day school setting in diverse and high-poverty areas.

This year, as a part of Ball State University's "Best Week Ever" Homecoming, a flag football tournament has been added to the list of student events. Chanel Richards, Homecoming Steering Committee publicity chairwoman, said flag football will replace Music on McKinley as Wednesday's Homecoming event.

Application forms for two of Ball State's Homecoming events are due this afternoon and the Homecoming Steering Committee is urging students to sign up and make this week truly "the best week ever." Homecoming Talent Search Chairwoman Sheri Nielcamp said Homecoming 2009's theme, "Best Week Ever," is a spin-off of the show "America's Got Talent" and is meant to show off students' skills through events and entertainment.

Los Angeles based vocal group m-pact achieved their success by using nature's first instrument - the human voice. Since forming the group the sextet has received multiple awards for their studio recordings from the Contemporary A Capella Recording Awards, including Best Jazz Album, Best Pop/R&B Song, Best Male Vocalist and Best Vocal Arrangement.

MEN'S GOLF: Ball State opens season at Wolf Creek Invitational

For Ball State students and Muncie residents, playing golf at the Delaware Country Club is usually a luxury. But when the Ball State men's golf team uses the facility for practice and qualifying it is all about business. After nearly a four-month offseason, the Cardinals will return to the green Saturday at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate in Zionsville.

Board of Trustees meeting scheduled for this afternoon

A Board of Trustees meeting will take place at 4 p.m. today at Bracken Library. An executive session is scheduled for 1 p.m. A highlight of the executive meeting is the transfer of real estate property from the university to a commercial enterprise. Director of University Communications Kevin Burke said proposals from three legal entities will be considered: one for-profit, one limited liability and one not-for-profit company.

Family tradition still brewing

Wine and beer are in Jeff Johnson's blood. The owner of the Muncie wine, beer and hydroponic supply store Wine-N-Vine, is carrying on his family's history of beer and winemaking. It started with his great-grandfather who brewed bootleg beer during Prohibition in the 1920s.

Ball State reports 2 H1N1 cases

Ball State University officials confirmed Wednesday that there have been two students likely infected with swine flu this school year. Kent Bullis, director of the Amelia T. Wood Health Center, said the Indiana State Department of Health told Ball State the strains tested positive for influenza A, a virus that is the H1N1 strain in 98 percent of patients.

White River cleanup planned for Saturday

Several Ball State University student organizations will participate in Muncie Delaware Clean and Beautiful's second annual White River cleanup Saturday. The cleanup could be the largest in the river's history, cleanup coordinator Layne Cameron said. Cameron, who is vice president of MDCB and associate director of University Communications, said Muncie residents, Ball State Freshman Connections students and the Natural Resources Club and Students for a Sustainable Campus will wade through the White River, picking up trash, such as water bottles, plastic grocery bags and auto parts, along the way.

Ball State University is taking a proactive approach to commemorating the events of Sept. 11, 2001. For the first time, Student Voluntary Services and the United Way of Delaware County are partnering to provide students with five different opportunities to volunteer to honor Patriot Day.

MEN'S TENNIS: Economy affects team's schedule

All of the trouble Wall Street has had this year with the economy has trickled down to the Cardinal Creek Tennis Courts on McKinley Avenue. Economic reasons played a huge factor in this year's schedule for the Ball State University's men's tennis team. "We definitely have to tighten our belt," coach Bill Richards said.
