Bracken Library is usually emptier on Friday than students' bank accounts are year-round. At the end of the week, many would rather relax and have fun than work on next week's homework. Empty as the residence halls on Thanksgiving, the library isn't exactly a diverse cultural mecca on that day.

Staring at the ground as two bamboo poles clicked together, sophomore Kylie Price hesitantly leaped between them and rhythmically hopped back out before the rods clamped on her foot. As she danced through the poles, the two students clicking sticks together sang a melody from Taiwan.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Charlie, we've got a problem:BSU loses again

The Ball State University women's volleyball team lost 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-13) to visiting University of Akron Sunday afternoon in the Cardinals' seventh five-set loss in nine opportunities. Coach Dave Boos said his team was unable to gain the momentum in a back-and-forth battle.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach not happy with defense in exhibition

Although the Ball State University women's basketball team won its exhibition game 75-69 against the Hoosier Lady Stars, coach Kelly Packard wants her team to improve on defense for the future. "I was most disappointed early on in our defensive intensity," Packard said.

Yes, the election did hurt. John McCain did not win, but the American people spoke in a very clear voice. Now we must look ahead. Anything else is foolish at this point. And for Republicans, there are many bright lights on the path ahead of us. When I came to Muncie for orientation, I met a lot of great people and I made friendships that continue to this day.

Alumni leave $1.6 million to Ball State Foundation

A $1.6 million gift from 1934 Ball State University graduates Marie and Gilbert Peart will provide students with scholarships for years to come. The university received the gift following the death of Gilbert Peart in 2007. Marie Alice Peart died in 2006.

Card games raise money for charity

Sigma Kappa sorority brought in more than $1,000 for Alzheimer's research during its annual Aces High card game tournament Friday at Irving Gym. President Abby Kaffenberger said between 30 and 45 people participated in Texas Hold'Em, Euchre and other games.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cards look for first conference wins of season

The Ball State University men's swimming and diving team is looking to start its Mid-American Conference schedule with a victory, while the women's team is looking to even up its record at 2-2 after two disappointing losses last weekend. The women's team plays host to the University of Akron on Friday, while both teams play host to the University at Buffalo on Saturday.

Meal plans discussed at forum

Residence Hall Association met with Director of Campus Dining Services Jon Lewis on Thursday to discuss possible changes to Ball State University's meal plan system. RHA wanted to discuss the idea of changing the dining system from the current meal equivalency system to something that operates on declining balance.

FIELD HOCKEY: BSU season ends with record loss

It is a tough task to keep great players down for a long time. The Ball State University field hockey team got a strong reminder of that in its 5-0 loss to Central Michigan University in the Mid-American Tournament quarterfinals Thursday. After not scoring in her last five games against the Cardinals, senior forward Samantha Sandham notched a hat trick.

Graffiti pieces stray from main-stream in gallery's exhibition

Tattoo artist and Ball State University alumnus Nate Harmon sips his beer between sentences. "Me and my friend tattooed each other in middle school during class using a needle and thread," he said. "Ever since then I kinda liked it." Harmon, who's been a tattoo artist for more than 10 years, co-owns 111 Arts Gallery and Tattoo Studios in downtown Muncie.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State returns to court

After the team had scrimmaged against itself for three weeks, coach Kelly Packard said she's ready to see her Ball State University women's basketball team play in a real game. "It will be nice to run some of our sets and some of the concepts that we've worked on defensively against somebody other than ourselves to get a true check for where we're at," Packard said.

Alcohol arrests rise with undefeated team

Indiana State Excise Police cited 19 people for alcohol violations at Ball State University's football game against Northern Illinois University on Wednesday. Cpl. Brian Lang said police issued more tickets Wednesday than at any other Ball State football game this year.

SOCCER: Three Cardinals earn All-MAC honors

The Ball State University soccer team had multiple players earn Mid-American Conference honors for the seventh consecutive season Thursday. Senior defender Sarah Schumacker and junior midfielder Megan Ridley both earned first team accolades while senior forward Emily Rein earned second team honors.

While he walks the sidelines of the court, Maurice Harding looks like the coach of a professional basketball team. Dressed with slacks, a button-up shirt and tie, he watches his team dribbling down the court. He's not just third floor Mysch/Hurst's resident assistant, but he's the residents' coach.
