AC building floods Monday

The long weekend for crew members from facilities planning and management was cut short after the basement of the Arts and Communication building flooded Monday evening. Maintenance Supervisor Mike Williams said the cold temperatures outside caused a radiator coil in a mechanical room to freeze and burst.

Former Ball State deputy athletics director makes first hire

Former Ball State University Deputy Athletics Director Ken Brown made his first hire as the athletics director of Lambuth University Saturday. Lambuth hired Hugh Freeze, who served as the interim head coach at the University of Mississippi this season, to be its football coach.

3rd Friday program features reggae dancing

As students walked into the Yuhas Room at the Rinker Center for International Programs, loud music played as about 20 students surrounded their instructor. As she danced to rhythmic beats, she shouted loudly over the music and instructed students to move their arms right and left while swaying their hips as they smiled.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Sluggish start doesn't prevent win

It took the Ball State University men's volleyball longer than they expected, but the team ended its two-match losing streak Saturday. The Cardinals rallied from a two games deficit to beat St. Francis University 26-30, 26-30, 30-21, 30-26, 15-13. "We came out sluggish and then we battled," middle attacker Matt McCarthy said.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals can't cage Lions

The end result was the same, but the way they got there made all the difference for the Ball State University men's volleyball team. Less than two weeks ago, the No. 3 Penn State University swept Ball State at the Outrigger Invitational in Hawaii. However, Friday the Nittany Lions defeated the Cardinals 30-23, 28-30, 30-27, 34-32.

BSU jumps into health challenge

The second-annual 10 in 10 challenge begins this week for Ball State University students and faculty who wish to lose some weight and get in shape. Patty Hollingsworth, director of the Health Enhancement Program, said the 10 in 10 challenge provides ways for people to learn how to reduce calories and increase activities at a basic level.

Clothing store managers optimistic after first week

The managers of a new clothing and cosmetic store in the Village said they are optimistic after a successful first week of business. Store manager Joyce King said she and co-manager Erin Stessen opened Konaléa last week. The store targets Ball State University students as well as the Muncie community, King said.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards rocket to Toledo

After enjoying a lone home game and its first victory in Worthen Arena this season, Ball State University's women's basketball team is making plans for another long road trip this weekend. After the Cardinals' 71-64 victory Tuesday against Eastern Michigan University, the team will attempt to win its fourth consecutive game to open the Mid-American Conference season when it travels to the University of Toledo on Saturday.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Attacker from Tampa to transfer to BSU

Ball State University women's volleyball coach Dave Boos received his fourth commitment for his 2008 class. Alisha Green, a 6-foot-2-inch attacker, spent the previous two seasons with the University of Tampa. In 2006 Tampa won the NCAA Division II National Championship and followed it up this past season with a quarterfinals appearance.

After a two month break from play, the Ball State University men's tennis team comes back to action this weekend to start its dual match season against the University of Illinois on Friday and Northwestern University on Sunday. "The team feels good," junior Joe Vallee said.

The Cardinals flock home this weekend as six teams play in Muncie

Men's Basketball Coming off its worst loss of the season, the Ball State men's basketball team plays host to Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m. Saturday at Worthen Arena. Coach Billy Taylor said the entire team must step up to get back on the winning track after a short turnaround from Wednesday's 26-point loss to Western Michigan.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cards, Flyers ready to dual

The women's tennis team will open up its dual meet spring schedule Saturday against the University of Dayton. Dayton (0-1), which lost 4-3 in its first match of the season to the University of Cincinnati, finished 6-17 last season and tied for 11th place in the Atlantic-10 Conference championships.

As part of Unity Week Ball State University students and faculty can attend N*W*C at 6:30 p.m. in Pruis Hall. N*W*C Coordinator Danielle Pye said she wanted to bring the event to a predominately white campus in a predominately white city because this is one way students can get exposure to other cultures.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards try to build back up at home

Ball State University's men's basketball team suffered its worst loss of the season, a 26-point loss at the hands of Western Michigan University on Wednesday night. The team's coach, Billy Taylor, said his team didn't respond well to its first league win and the team's captains, Peyton Stovall and Anthony Newell, blamed themselves for the defeat, despite 31 combined points.

After opening its season at home, the Ball State University women's track and field team travels to Bowling Green, Ohio today for the Bowling Green Quadrangular. The Cardinals will compete against several regional teams, including the University of Cincinnati.
