Students' guide to activism

Students have seen their fair share of mock waterboarding, giant posters of mangled fetuses and shouting this semester as protests and demonstrations have landed on campus.

Police seek possible gunman at Central Conn. State

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) — An armed man was spotted on the campus of Central Connecticut State University on Monday, prompting a schoolwide lockdown and warnings for students to stay away from windows as police SWAT teams swarmed the area. The university declared a campus emergency late Monday morning, and several hours later its website continued urging students to remain inside buildings. University spokesman Mark McLaughlin said, “Somebody was seen either with a gun or was thought to have a gun.” The area around a 400-student dorm was the focus of the police search, but by mid-afternoon authorities were allowing students to leave the building in small groups. Jordan Governale, a 20-year-old junior from Farmington, said he walked by a man carrying a backpack and with a sword and sheath strapped to his back.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Jacqui Seidel, a look back

Before the season began, Ball State women’s volleyball head coach Steve Shondell referred to senior Jacqui Seidel as the moral and emotional leader of the team. It’s an easy argument to make, seeing as she’s competed in 91 matches throughout her Ball State career, seeing time in 10 as a freshman. When Seidel entered Ball State, she sat behind Brittany McGinnis, who helped mentor her.

Officer says cooperation is key when dealing with police

A good attitude goes a long way when confronting police, especially when they decide whether someone will receive a ticket instead of a ride to jail. Brandon Thomas, an Indiana Excise Officer, said the last thing a person should do is run from police when they hear sirens or see lights. “Just don’t walk away,” Thomas said.

Ball State alumni hope Gora's successor will bring new ideas

Ball State alumni and benefactors expect whoever succeeds President Jo Ann Gora to continue working with them to keep raising Ball State’s reputation. Gora, who became president in the summer of 2004 and plans to leave in the summer of 2014, has worked with alumni and benefactors to raise funding and awareness for many projects at Ball State in the last decade. One example of Gora’s fundraising is the “Ball State Bold Capital Campaign.” In 2008, the university aimed to raise $200 million.

The Ball State Women’s Volleyball swept Eastern Michigan in 3 sets on senior night at Worthen Arena to improve to 22-5.

Ball State beats Eastern Michigan on senior night

On the final Saturday home game for Ball State women’s volleyball’s five seniors, the game wasn’t what was first on their minds. Ball State knocked off Eastern Michigan University 3-0 (25-17), (25-19), (25-16), but the win was secondary to what the actual match meant to the players. For the five seniors, Jacqui Seidel, Mindy Marx, Kylee Baker, Lauren Grant and Catie Fredrich, it was the last weekend game they would ever play at home. “We did our best to take the sadness out of it and we want to celebrate this season,” Seidel said.
