WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State’s keys all season fall flat in loss

Strategies that Ball State women’s volleyball head coach Steve Shondell preached all season seemed to vanish at the Mid-American Conference Tournament. During the 31-game regular season, his team relied on accurate passing, a lights-out defense and swarming energy to vault them to a 24-7 record. It may have been injuries, Western Michigan’s game plan or the grind of playing 116 sets throughout the regular season that played a factor in Ball State’s first-round loss. Whichever it was, there was something missing from Ball State on Friday night. “We could have had more intensity tonight,” sophomore outside hitter Alex Fuelling said.


Schools seek answers after voters reject tax hikes

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Failed referenda in two Indiana communities are forcing school officials to regroup as they assess their needs for everything from leaky roofs to bus transportation. Mishawaka voters this month rejected a $28 million referendum that would have helped upgrade security and technology, replace aging boilers, fix roofs and make other repairs.


Nuclear deal blocks Iran’s path to bomb

GENEVA — Iran struck a historic deal Sunday with the United States and five other world powers, agreeing to a temporary freeze of its nuclear program in the most significant agreement between Washington and Tehran in more than three decades of estrangement. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani endorsed the agreement, which commits Iran to curb its nuclear activities for six months in exchange for limited and gradual sanctions relief, including access to $4.2 billion from oil sales.

Justin Timberlake, Rihanna win big at AMAs

LOS ANGELES ­— Taylor Swift’s fans have done it again, voting her the American Music Awards artist of the year for a third time. Swift won Sunday night’s top honor, giving her a leading four trophies as fans celebrated the women of pop music. Swift didn’t perform, but she was a constant presence on stage and the camera alighted on her as she danced to stars like Kendrick Lamar and Luke Bryan.

Ball State drops 12 spots in safe sex ranking

Ball State’s ranking for sexual health resources and awareness has fallen 12 spots from last year, and 26 spots from 2011. The rankings are sponsored by Trojan condoms and are based on how effective university health centers are at providing services and information about sex to campuses.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State’s loss brings it to 0-2 against in-state opponents

In the beginning of the season, Ball State men’s basketball head coach James Whitford said the three games he had circled on his schedule were the three Indiana colleges of Indiana State, Butler and Valparaiso. Ball State is now 0-2 after playing Indiana State and Butler.



	Muncie Boy Scouts give a Thanksgiving meal to people in need on November 23. The Boy Scouts teamed up with Muncie Fire Department to feed around 325 people.

Two local organizations team up to feed those in need

The groups hosted Thanksgiving Throwdown at the United Methodist Church on High Street to benefit residents of Muncie’s homeless shelters.


Ball State falls to Western Michigan in MAC tournament

The loss was the team’s first to Western Michigan as Ball State knocked off the team twice earlier in the season. “Tonight, they were making the plays that we were making last week,” Ball State head coach Steve Shondell said about Western Michigan.

The Culver’s on McGalliard Road is expected to open in early March. Rayme Swan, franchise owner who also owns one in Marion, Ind., and Craig Culver, co-founder of Culver’s, were at the ground-breaking ceremony Friday afternoon. Swan said Ball State played a large role in deciding to open a restaurant in Muncie.


Mall, university, hospital keys to Muncie growth

The Muncie Redevelopment Commission accepted the proposal to assist in construction for Dick’s Sporting Goods as well as a proposal to expand development on farmland near the Muncie airfield. Todd Donati, president of Delaware County Commissioners, said that while the expansion of the Muncie Mall with Dick’s Sporting Goods will create jobs, those jobs aren’t the priority for the development commission. “The jobs we’re bringing in, that’s great,” Donati said.
