Homecoming village brings more people than expected

This year's Homecoming steering committee got new attractions for the Homecoming Village. They added water walkers – giant hamster balls that rolled around on top of the water, bungee jumping, a tap photo booth, henna tattoos and a DJ.

Hayley Williams, chair of the Homecoming Village said the only thing they kept from last year was the rock wall.

“I think we’ve attracted more items than we had,” Williams said. “We just keep adding more and changing the variety to cater to all.”

A few hours before the Village started, Williams said she was hoping for about 1,500 people to come, while last year they had over 2,000. She said because of the weather, she wouldn’t be too disappointed if they didn’t hit the same number as last year.

Still, students said it was better than it was in past years.

Brogan Drumm, a senior theater major, said there was more to do and more going on this year than there was last year, as well as more free activities.

“I know last year you had to pay for a lot of the stuff and I don’t have any money, I’m a student,” Drumm said. “So this year it was really nice just to be able to come and hang out and not have to worry about paying for anything.”

Drumm said she liked seeing all the different organizations that came out for the Village.

“I think that’s my favorite part, just seeing all the types of students, Greek Life, independent students and then people who are just looking for people to hang out with.”

Alyssa Vanskyock, a junior history and women’s and gender studies major, came to the Village to hang out with her sorority sisters.

“It was dead last year,” Vanskyock said. “The DJ definitely helps – I don’t remember them bringing one in last year. The music is awesome … and the atmosphere is electric.”
