More than 38,000 suicides occur each year, making it one of the top 10 leading causes of death in the United States, according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
On Sunday, more than 100 participants will walk during the Out of the Darkness Walk hosted on campus as well as several others nationwide.
Ball State's walk is in its fourth year, starting in 2011.
The purpose of the walk is to raise money for research and education programs on preventing suicide, according to the AFSP website.
The university's chapter of Alive Campaign and AFSP will host the walk, which has exceeded its goal of reaching $5,000. As of publication, participants have raised $5,292.
Katherine Berning, a sophomore social work major, has been involved with the campaign for two years.
“The walk is a great time to remember those you’ve lost and to tell others about suicide awareness,” she said.
Berning has lost three friends to suicide and she said one of the goals of the campaign is to give people hope and reasons to live.
Brandon Puszkiewicz, chairman of the Ball State walk, has participated in the campaign since his sophomore year of high school.
“I want people to know that suicide is not a taboo topic to talk about,” he said.
Online registration closed Friday, however those who would still like to walk can register in person during check-in time from noon until 1 p.m. Sunday. The walk is beings at 1 p.m. at the Atrium patio.
The walk will accept donations until June 30.
Last year, the walk raised about $4,000.
