Flash mob protests investment in fossil fuels

Chaos in the Atrium is fairly normal for Ball State students, but today student activists made it even more chaotic.

Students for Creative Social Activism and Go Fossil Free Ball State broke into song and dance among a crowd of baffled strangers to a greener version of “Gold Digger” by Kanye West. New lyrics such as, “Get the frack out, go ‘head get out” express the students’ feelings about Ball State’s dependence and investment in the fossil fuel industry and the environmentally damaging process of fracking.

“It’s a really critical issue,” Kourtney Dillavou, cofounder of Go Fossil Free Ball State said. “It’s a good way for us to show that green technology is the way to go. We don’t approve of what the fossil fuel industry is doing to us.”

According to Fossil Free, most public universities invest 3-6% of their endowment in fossil fuel companies. The flash mob commenced to raise awareness of Ball State’s involvement in the fossil fuel industry despite its movement towards sustainability.

Their campaign is part of an international effort to encourage public universities to divest themselves of the fossil fuel industry.
