Winter storm drops 5 inches of snow accross state by noon

INDIANAPOLIS — A winter storm has already dropped 5 inches or more of snow on parts of Indiana and more is expected as the state’s prepares for dangerous Arctic air.

The National Weather Service reports northwest Indiana has been the hardest hit so far. Portage had received 5.5 inches of snow, LaPorte 5 inches and Valparaiso 4.4 inches. Osceolea, about 10 miles east of South Bend, had received 4.5 inches, nearby Granger 4.1 inches and Elkhart 2.5 inches.

A winter storm warning remains in effect in much of the state until 1 a.m. Monday. The weather service says snowfall is expected to continue and become heavy at times this afternoon. Some areas of northern Indiana are expecting up to 14 inches. The weather service is warning of deadly wind chills.
