Obama starts thread on Reddit

President Barack Obama reached out to potential voters through the Internet on Wednesday.

The president started a live Ask Me Anything forum on the Web community site Reddit at about 4:30 p.m. Eastern time.

Obama answered 10 questions, ranging in topic from student loans and small businesses to the White House's beer and basketball players.

To prove that it was the president himself answering questions, Obama tweeted from his official account "Hey, everyone: I'll be taking your questions online today." He also posted a picture of himself sitting at a laptop.

CBS reported that within 15 minutes, the thread had received more than 1,300 comments.

Appropriate for the setting of the conversation, Obama answered a question about Internet freedom.

"We will fight hard to make sure that the internet remains the open forum for everybody - from those who are expressing an idea to those to want to start a business," Obama said in the thread.

In a response to another question, Obama said the most difficult decision he had to make during this term was to surge forces in Afghanistan.

"Any time you send our brave men and women into battle, you know that not everyone will come home safely, and that necessarily weighs heavily on you," Obama said in the thread.

The last question the president answered was about balancing family life and hobbies with his presidential duties. At the end of Obama's response, he mentioned he needed to get going so he was back in Washington, D.C., in time for dinner.

Obama even made a reference to the "Obama rage face" meme.

"By the way, if you want to know what I think about this whole reddit experience - NOT BAD!" he said.
